AI Article from Salon -- No Spoilers

Last night, I posted something about this, but deleted it so as to not get into this discussion. Since it's here . . .
Part of the problem I had with the article was that the author felt the need to point out that Kim and Justin are "mixed-race" while Ruben and Tamyra are black.
You would think that the monolithic America described in the article would have at least as much problem voting for someone of a mixed-race as they would for someone who is black. If not more so.
Edited: because I still don't want to get into this discussion.

She just looks like she's quit doing crunches in that tummy-baring one to me... Oh, and, the hair looks recockulous, but I guess no more so than the grungy blond dreads she was doing before.

To click or not to click
I am terribly conflicted as to whether I should click on the freak-show link. I am definitely leaning towards not clicking on it, since it will probably offend my delicate sensibilities to the point of making me puke.

How many times do I have to tell you this, Thurgreed?!!!!

I read somewhere (People 50 Most Beautiful issue?) that she blamed her sudden weight gain on the Pill and she is back in training to get in shape for her upcoming World Tour.

AI Review (with Spoilers!)

Last night was almost enough to make me stop watching the stupid show.
They each sang three songs.
Kim went first.
Ruben was fine.
Clay was shaky.
Edited to add: I did not vote last night. (I was watching the replay of the Giro.) I should have voted for Ruben. I wonder if he is going to make it to the final. Clay is definitely through and Kim kept remarking about being the only girl left, so she might make it through as well.
I say bottom two: Kim and Ruben. Kim goes home.
|
A couple of things:
Kim: Thought she was solid. "Band of Gold", her first song, set the bar for the first batch of performances. Missed her second song, so I cannot comment. Third song - "Inseparable" - she did a nice job, and it tested her range. The judges uniformly liked it. The only negative was that I think she had some problems with her lower register at the beginning of the song, but got better as the song went on.
Clay: After reading the Salon article, I will only believe the conspiracy theory if he makes it to the out of the final three, because the producers/judges did nothing to help his cause.
Come on, the "random" song selection of "Vincent" did nothing for him. The song sucked. He sucked. He didn't seem to know what to do with it, his phrasing was, at best, odd, and while he may have eliminated the "winking", the faces he made while singing were disturbing -- in all of his performances that night. Paula's selection of "Mack the Knife" and Clay's show-tuney performance were terrible, but the judges liked it, and "Unchained Melody" could only be described as the coup de grace, where by his own song selection Clay managed to shoot himself in the foot. Very bad night for him in my estimation.
Ruben: Smooth. "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" -- did a very nice job with it and seemed to have the most fun with that song his best performance of the night. It was nice to see him do something different. I thought "Smile" was okay -- for Ruben, which is generally better than the other's best performances. The third song was Peabo Bryson's "If ever you're in my arms again" -- vintage Ruben. I would agree that he did sound a bit hoarse, though.
About the salon article. I noticed the ad was for "Mr. Personality". Is anyone still watching this show? There's been no talk about it. Though it hasn't become a regular on the spookyfish viewing schedule, I did happen to stop to watch while channel surfing on Monday. A few things i've noticed:
Final 2 selected -- Will the "millionaire". In case anyone forgot, he's a "millionaire" and Chris the motivational speaker mind-control-svengali guy. Did anyone bet any differently? Yawn. Let's see, the cliffhanger is whether Hayley will choose Will, the sincere millionaire, who has never in his life felt this way so quickly about anyone (He's in luv, you know) or Chris, who might be able to let down his guard enough to where he might be able to fall in love with her. Any bets on who wins?
Monica only showed up at the end during the selection. She must not have tested well, although less screen time for her is not a bad thing.
Edited to Add:
Bottom 2: Clay and Kim.
Should go home - Clay
Will go home - Kim
Not because I buy into conspiracy theories, mind you, but because I'm convinced the primary voting demographic (read: pre-teen and teenage girls) heavily favors Clay's soulless balladeer stylings.

I didn't watch the show but I did read the Fox recap. Whoever writes that thinks the show and Hayley and all the men are pretty dumb, you can tell (sort of like a TWoP recap by the station that is putting on the show). Anyway, I will bet any takers that she picks Will and Fox does the stupid fairy-tale ending shit they did on Joe $$$. I have serious doubts that the people picking on those two shows had any actual right to pick. I think that Fox told them who to pick so that Fox could make up the story how they want it to be. The theme in this one will end up being -- she picked for personality, but ended up with her prince charming millionaire instead of the hypnotist scoundrel.
Unless the execs at Fox really hate Hayley, in which case they'll have her pick weirdo hypnotist guy.

If your sensibiliites are delicate then you will be offended and sickened by what you see. The web is always out there if you ever decide that you just have to see for yourself all the crazy and demented things people do to mutilate, I mean modify, themselves.
Some of the images are very disturbing, but what is more disturbing is that people willingly do this to themselves, and that they pay other (non-medical) people to do this to them.
Tribal tats and other National Geographic type-body modifications I put into a different category. These cultures have developed over centuries and the tatoos and body modifications are a rite of passage, or signify significant events on one's life. Permanently scarring/mutilating your body because you are hanging out with a bunch of (insert group name here) and want to be one of them is just odd. It's still cultural but on a different scale.
Anne
P.S. Yes, it was weird being in Kenya and seeing the Masai warriors with Kodak film canisters in their ear lobes. I guess it was quite the fashion trend back in the late '70's.
