Important not critical. Most of the time it will not be used as a laptop.

Medium is fine. Most of the time it will not be used as a lap top.

XP is still the standard. Vista, the next version, is scheduled to come out Q1 2007. Some manufacturers are already selling computers as "Vista-ready." If you are going to interested in upgrading, you're going to need to buy a machine considerablely more powerful than what would be necessary to run the programs you listed (which would be okay on just about anything you can pick up today).

"scheduled" is probably not the right word. "currently projected" is better, and would at least implicitly acknowledge that the new OS was once "scheduled" to come out in 2003, and then 2004, and then early 2006. To be fair, Microsoft has issued two significant service packs to XP that have updated aspects of the OS.

American People to GOP Senate: Drop Dead.
So the initial results of the GOP Initiative to Do Something, Shit, Anything About High Gas Prices are in. Short answer - Americans from the left, right and center are offended.
- The Senate Republican plan to mail $100 checks to voters to ease the burden of high gasoline prices is eliciting more scorn than gratitude from the very people it was intended to help.
Aides for several Republican senators reported a surge of calls and e-mail messages from constituents ridiculing the rebate as a paltry and transparent effort to pander to voters before the midterm elections in November.
"The conservatives think it is socialist bunk, and the liberals think it is conservative trickery," said Don Stewart, a spokesman for Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, pointing out that the criticism was coming from across the ideological spectrum.
Angry constituents have asked, "Do you think we are prostitutes? Do you think you can buy us?" said another Republican senator's aide, who was granted anonymity to openly discuss the feedback because the senator had supported the plan.
Conservative talk radio hosts have been particularly vocal. "What kind of insult is this?" Rush Limbaugh asked on his radio program on Friday. "Instead of buying us off and treating us like we're a bunch of whores, just solve the problem." In commentary on Fox News Sunday, Brit Hume called the idea "silly."
The reaction comes as the rising price of gasoline has put the public in a volatile mood and as polls show that cynicism about Congress is at its highest level since 1994.
Nice. This is going over with the public about as well as Bush's last trip from the ranch to sign the Schiavo bill. Casey Stengel was right: Can't anyone here play this game?

Good point, Hank. And the fun thing is to watch their success in parlaying this political control into substantive policy. At this rate, I suspect the next Bush initiative to impress voters will be for the President to take a whiz off of the WH balcony.

I think Gatti means the pimpin' game. The mistake here was to try to buy the public with $100, instead of $300 or $600 like they did with the taxes last time. That's some serious cut-rate shit.
You treat your girls like that, it's only a matter of time before they start looking for another daddy, right?

I hate people. (spree: article about new details of rape near Houston, pretty graphic details, still unclear if the victim is going to make it, two weeks later).
I can't help but notice that the victim is Hispanic and the perpetrators are Anglos, and it's pretty clear that the victim's ethnicity was the primary reason for the assult. I wonder if more of these assaults are going to spring up around the country as the immigration debate gets more and more heated.

What kind should I get?
Where should I buy it?

Bilmore asked the right questions. That said, I bought a larger Sony with a big screen a few years ago, and never liked it. It was loud, and had crappy battery life, and problems with the power supply. Eventually the motherboard went up in smoke.
So then I bought a mid-sized Dell, spending about $1000. I've been totally happy with it.

I had a minute, so I looked it up. To run a full version of Vista (there will be cut down versions available), you'll need a 128mb graphics card (surprisingly, to me anyway), a fairly decent processor (MS says Pentium M or above - I think you'd be happier with a Intel Dual Core), 512MB internal memory (but everyone says at least 1GB, and the biggest hard drive you can find (at least 80MB - you'l have a hard time finding something bigger in a notebook that's not a big price jump).
I've also heard good things about Dells, although I've also seen a lot of complaints lately (really lately). The Dell M710 is pretty much the standard for corporate America these days (a client just bought 1200 of them a few months ago), but doesn't seem to have enough power for Vista. It's a really good combination of size, weight and power (I used to have the predecessor, the M610, as my work computer). HP/Compaq laptops suck ass. Sony's are cool, but somewhat fragile. ThinkPads, no longer made by IBM, have a reputation of being pretty rock solid, but are definitely expensive for the specifications.
And of course, the new MacBook will boot Windows XP, you you could use either operating system with it. But XP has to be purchased seperately.

I bought a Dell 700M (M700?) a few months ago. I really like it so far. And it seems pretty rugged (yes, I've knocked it off the coffeetable once or twice).
Irritating sidenote - it came with fucking Word Perfect loaded on it instead of Word (I haven't grabbed the disc from one of our other computer purchases to load it up yet b/c I use Word thru Citrix, but it makes it a hassle to open docs that I e-mail to my home e-mail address to work on). Who the FUCK uses Word Perfect?

I've already bought it in the last couple of years, but thanks for caring. I just have to manage to find the stupid discs, seeing as how I have made 2 moves in the last 2 years.
(now that I think about it, 3 moves in the last 2 1/2 years. yikes.)
