Timely Joke

A guy who has been stranded on a desert island for 10 years, sees an unusual speck on the horizon. "It's not a ship," he thinks to himself. As the speck gets closer and closer he begins to rule out the possibilities of a small boat, then even a raft. In a few minutes a drop-dead gorgeous blonde woman emerges from the surf wearing a wet suit and scuba gear.

She approaches the shocked guy and says, "Tell me, how long has it been since you've had a cigarette?

"Ten years," he replies. With that, she reaches over and unzips a waterproof pocket on her left sleeve and pulls out a pack, he takes one, lights it and takes a long drag. "Man oh man!! Is that ever good!"

"And how long has it been since you've had a shot of whiskey?" she asks.

Trembling he replies "Ten years!" She reaches over and unzips a pocket on her right sleeve pulls out a flask and hands it to him. He opens the flask, takes a long swig and exclaims "That's absolutely fantastic!"

At this point she begins to slowly unzip the long zipper that runs down the front of her wet suit, looks at him seductively and asks, "How long has it been since you've played around?"

With tears in his eyes the guy falls to his knees and cries...

"Oh sweet Jesus! Don't tell me you've got golf clubs in there too!"

I recommend Aguirre to people all the time. It ties with Fitzcarraldo for the quintessetial Klaus-Kinski-Man's-Struggle-With-Himself-While-He-Self-destructs-and-descends-into-madness movie. Actually, all Klaus Kinski movies, except Delta Force, are like this b/c Kinski was insane and therefore the descent was more like walking into sunken living room, but they are all classics.

Joking aside, I'll give some thought to the idea.

I have to consider how much time it would take to implement something versus how much fun it would be watching you people write crazy ads.

I am not inclined to add any major functionality right now, as MR already said, and for the same reasons.

But perhaps we can rig something simple. Even just a special passworded forum that people can access perhaps.

I think we've stumbled across the solution to the funding problem for our little site.

nosferatu, anyone?
I gotta tell you - I own both versions and the remake isn't half as creepy as the Murnau/Schreck silent version.

Speaking of creepy German impressionistic silent flicks, hey BRC, do you still have my Cabinet of Dr. Caligari DVD?

Best quote from the article re: Aguirre:

"Notoriously short-fused and more than a little loco in the cabeza, the actor quit the film until Herzog threatened to shoot him."

Now, that's drama.

Just picked up The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson...

A very good read, especially for anyone with connections to Chicago. It very effectively juxtaposes the optimism and wonderment surrounding the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 with the horrors of a serial killer who preyed on scores of innocent people who attended it. Gives you the same creepy feeling reading it as The Alienist, only its NON-FICTION...

On the CD front, enjoyed the new self-titled CD by The Thorns, a trio composed of Matthew Sweet, Pete Droge and Shaun Mullins. Definitely not cutting edge, but the mostly-acoustic sound and three-part harmonies are reminiscent of the Byrds, the Eagles, and Crosby, Stills and Nash, with a touch of Brian Wilson. Very pleasant summer listening...

Actually, I just googled and saw that it wasn't Delta Force, but that other Golan/Globus classic, Operation Thunderbolt. KK did several masterpiece movies (with Herzog) but also did a lot of shitty movies if you paid him well enough--and wasn't embarrassed to admit they were shitty and he was a greedy bastard. I think he turned down Spielberg for Raiders of the Lost Ark, though.

The Documentary "My Best Friend" has a couple of his legendary tantrums--including one where he is screaming at the top of his lungs, threatening to quit and kick someone's ass because he didn't like the catering. Herzog denied holding a gun to his head during the movie, but did admit to going to his house in the middle of the night to shoot him but being chased away by Kinski's guard dog.

I believe that is an example of German Expressionism, not Impressionism. I don't want to think what German Impressionism would look like.

You could use "Kuato." But that would provoke a lot of questions from people who've never seen "Total Recall."
