But now, as testimony to an imperfect world, online dating is on the wane.

The New York Times reports that after years of soaring growth, technology's matchmaking services are drifting the other way. People who thought it was the perfect answer for singles are, like the partygoer who stayed too long at the dance, shutting down the laptop and moving back to the old options. They are settling for dating services and friends' matchmaking.

E-dating revenues rose 73 percent in 2002 and 77 percent in 2003, according to industry reports. But for 2004, the growth slowed to 19 percent. Spending on online personals dipped during the first two quarters of this year to less than $114 million, compared to $117 million in the last quarter a year ago.

It seems people who jumped into the game with enthusiasm now talk about disillusionment with the people they met who were nothing like what they expected.

You think? Fortunately, there is also good news for other FBers:

At the same time, there are still more than 800 dating sites. Niche sites such as those for elderly singles, obese singles and gay singles are still springing up. And experts think growth will come from the new arrivals that missed the first party.

Excellent. I was looking for Friendly's photos a year ago or so, because one of my Friendly's friends was getting married. Alas, I think that my high school vanity got in the way of me ever being photographed in the blue and white dress (with matching apron). Truly a shame. If I had the dress today, it would make a great Halloween costume.
