Second Acts in American Life
Yes, there are.
From Gawker:
- Where’s a reporter with no credibility and a reputation for being an administration mouthpiece to go once she’s been drummed out of her former place of employ for practicing some of the most sloppy, credulous, bordering-on-disingenuous journalism that said employer has even seen, even considering the fact that it once also employed Jayson Blair? Naturally, The Wall Street Journal Editorial Page, a magical world where taxes cause cancer, the ghost of Vince Foster has risen from the grave to wreak havoc on President Bush’s poll numbers, and Judith Miller can be considered a legitimate journalist. Judy shows up today with the first of a two-parter on Libya’s nuclear ambitions. If you think that maybe the last topic Judy should be reporting on is W.M.D. then you have no idea what passes for fact in the Rightwing Funny Farm that is the Editorial Page.
Funny, yes, but honestly, what would we EXPECT Judith to write about? The woman specializes in the drums of war. Fortunately, WSJ has several extra sets left over from the 60s, so they've set Judith up in the corner with brand new mallets.

See, you mean this as an insult, but given your embarrasing longing for Penske's place on this board for photoshopped images and dime-store partisanship, I know that with this comment you're simply trying to reach out for the familiar. We love you too, Hankie.

Do you think anyone returns her phone calls these days? Is this maybe why she's running with the WMD angle on a nation we just restored diplomatic relations with?

I don't get "consumer confidence." the economy is bad because we're not confident that the economy will be good?

Consumers who aren't confident that the economy will stay strong don't buy big durables, cars, and houses. Thirty years ago, a drop in those types of purchases would have a greater impact on the economy. Consumer confidence isn't as good a predictor in our service economy. No matter how many people are unemployed or not getting big raises, we seem to consume more than enough Big Macs and video games.

Son, it's like this. If I think I'm going to have a bumper crop coming, well, I'm happy to let the boys in the fields have themselves three good meals. If the crops really good, well, I'll give them an extra shirt to wear this year. So the yankee farmers and millers who send hominy and cloth down here do OK. As soon as it looks like the cotton's not coming, well, I cut them back to two meals no new shirts, so we buy a lot less hominy and only the good cloth from England that we wear ourselves. So the yankees suffer.

Not exactly. the cotton could be a bad crop even if you were confident.
The economy is good unless we think it won't be. It just seems like if we had better mental discipline, and were always "glass is half full", then it always would be.

Boy, if it's going to be a good harvest, I need those boys in the field strong, and that's why I give them the extra hominy. I've got to make some guess, otherwise I'd just be feeding them three square of corn all the time.
But you're right, the extra shirts are pure discretionary spending. No shirts until the cotton is in. Tell the Yankees to lay off some workers.

I know what you mean. I have always believed that if my mental discipline had been better I really would have been able to fly after I took all that acid and jumped off the roof of the garage. It was my last minute doubts that sabotaged me.
Isn't the "consumer confidence" number a measure of how likely it is Americans will continue to spend money they don't have? What's the national savings rate these days? Negative two percent or something? My understanding of what's killing the Dow, et al, this week is the fear that unexpectedly high inflation numbers will lead the Fed to raise interest rates again. Which means it will be harder for consumers to borrow money to spend on cheeseburgers, SUVs and videogames. I have vowed not to look at my 401k balances until after the 30th of the month.
