I'm vegetarian apart from ocassional consumption of sushi, so most of the food I eat is cheaper anyway than a meat-based diet, but I took a share in a local farm last year and (apart from what I spend when I eat out), I spend less on food for me than I have in a long time. It's not really that inconvenient either. You just pick up your vegetables every week. And this is mostly organic food - for organic food it is dirt (pardon the pun) cheap.
So I don't think it is as much of an affordability problem - cheap good food can be found, as an education problem. People are instinctively drawn to high-fat, sweet, overloaded with flavor type food, and if this food is also advertised as "good for you", which much crappy processed food is, some people are not educated enough to know the difference, and won't seek out alternatives.
Maybe it is up to the people who are educated to educate others, rather than just criticizing, because it is us who probably end up paying for their health problems.

A lot of the "it's cheaper to eat fast food" myth stems from people who truly do eat paycheck to paycheck, and who never go into a grocery store and stock up their kitchen with "ingredients". In a kitchen without oil, flour, sugar, and all the million other little items, you can't make a dinner unless you buy everything for that dinner. Thus, a Big Mac becomes a cheaper alternative.
Granted, it's not truly cheaper - but, in a very short-term view (which is what people with ten dollars until next payday tend to live by), it's more managable.
(Picking up our half-cow tonight. The farm share idea is wonderful, if you have the bucks to invest up front.)

The Orlando Sentinal story talked about how depressed he has been because the Magic sucks so bad. I wish the guy could get to a decent team, because it's fun watching him in the playoffs, and you won't see him this year.

For a bacon sandwich all you need is bread/bacon/frying pan.

Is tobacco subsidized? Or are you being sarcastic?

I wasn't suggesting that you change it. Nobody ever said that disturbing was a bad thing.

There's a great movie that came out at Sundance recently where a healthy guy eats nothing but fast food for a month. At the end of the month, his cholestrol is throught the roof and he's gained 30 LBS. Yes, 30. The star said his joints hurt and he felt lethargic and shitty the whole time. Now, imagine eating that stuff for a period of years.
