Ahem. It is traditional for newbers to make an inaugural post about wildlife they are presently observing from the windows of their respective home offices. No one can remember exactly why; I believe it has something to do with oblations to the Great Old Ones who lie in the submerged city of R'lyeh somewhere in the Southeast Pacific Ocean, dead but dreaming. Have fun picking a new login!

I can't believe he made too much noise about the Vikes in the early part of the season. They seem to have settled down and figured out how to win after the Sex Boat Scandal but the early season was painful.

Dude, the thing making me barf right now is Penn State getting dicked into a bowl against Bobby Bowden's worst team in years. Sure, seeing Paterno assfuck Bowden in a clash of the the two winnigest coaches in history makes it kind of cool, but I don't think the bowl is fair to Bowden or Paterno. Bowden should play Penn State when he's got a better team, and Paterno deserves to play a better team. Oregon deserves Penn State. A Notre Dame/PSU or PSU/Ohio State bowl would also be great (but they'd never waste two huge draws in one bowl like that). The system fucks PSU, OSU and ND because they are the top draws in the nation.

All that said, FSU is not as bad as their record, and even at their worst, they could beat almost any top ten team. I expect them to give PSU a few scares.

ETA: I guess I should look at the bright side... a PSU/VT bowl would be a boring bloodbath.

ABBA's New Car

Seeing as how it is FUCKING FREEZING where I live, my car wouldn't start this morning so I could not get to the gym (I take public transportation to work because I am a terror on wheels and probably would get lost either to or from work, which is 3.2 miles from my house - yes, I am aware that I have a problem and I don't give a shit). My gym is 1.22 miles away and I really only drive to and from it when it is FUCKING FREEZING outside and to and from the grocery store. I take cabs when I go out. I very VERY VERY VERY rarely drive. My question: if my aluminum foil car is dead, what should I buy to replace it? I don't care about anything other than that the car "goes" and that it is as small as possible so I can park the stupid fucking thing. Alternatively I could just move into the gym since I can take public transportation from the gym to work also - just not from home to the gym at 5:00 am, which is when I need to go.

Am I the only one who thinks it's weird to see a relatively lengthy and engaged discussion of college football from you?

Did you know that Joe Paterno is seventy-eight years old?

I am sorry, I missed this. Unfortunately, at this time of year, the wildlife I see from my windows is generally dressed rather heavily. Come springtime, I believe I could go on at some length about the co-eds and grad students who populate the street near my office. For some reason I mainly notice females of the species. Would the board prefer that I put off the tradition until springtime?

Any reason other than not starting when it is fucking freezing that you think the car is dead? Sounds like you just need a jump or maybe a new battery. You have to start the car periodically when it is that cold, or this will happen.

A Honda. An Accord if you want to have room in the back seat, a Civic if the parking lot at the gym is really cramped.

The Not Bob Clan has a Honda Accord that is apparently older than SEC Chick, and it still runs well at 200,000 miles.

Or it could happen even if the car is being started regularly, but I see your point.

I missed this tradition as well. At home I see wild turkeys, deer and squirrels and hear the occasional coyote. At work, flabby beasts in cubicle cages in the next building over.

Well, yeah, of course you can always have it happen, but common wisdom in my little corner of iceberg paradise is to remember to start and run it for awhile at least once a week. I learned this the hard way and waiting to get a jump in the middle of the night when it is freezing outside just sucks - and is especially nerveracking when you've let the thing get so dead it cuts off again on the highway while you're driving home after the jump.

Yes. Because of largely whitebread student body demographics, gym dimensions, and several other factors, Cameron Crazies are by turns effective, clever, insular, clique-ish, and largely annoying.

Let this unpleasant reality not obscure the view, however, of other Duke folks who are handsome, charming, and witty. And humble.

I think I still have your book, but not your contact info.

Email me, or the book gets it.

Oh. And hi.

[summary: BCS-suck it]

EVerybody is saying the BCS got it right this year. Bullshit. The BCS can suck it. How hard would it be to come up with USC and Texas? A three-year old could make that matchup.

The BCS sucks becuase it can't get it right most years, and because it still doesn't handle the second, third, and fourth matchups well. Sure, I realize they have to have the tie-ins with the conferences, but Oregon got dicked because VT choked. And ND, despite sucking for 10 years, has cut a sweetheart deal, where they get beaucoup money and don't have to finish nearly as high.

Too bad Colorado didn't beat Texas. That would have created yet another mess, or stuck a bowl with FSU-Colorado. No one would agree to do that again.

It was negative six this morning. I doubt she even needs a jump. Just wait for it to warm up a bit. She'll be driving again by May.
