From high school hazing to monkeypox, horrible nightclub disasters, crazed mullet-headed fans attacking ballplayers, corked bats, US Open streakers and Bears Football presented by Bank One, things have been a little bizarre lately...
Now comes this story:

Police raid in suburban Lyons, IL at purported law office uncovers Swingers Club...
Suggested slogan -- "I'm a lawyer, I'll screw you one way or another..."

"Village officials told ABC7 News that people would come to the building for legal advice, it is a law office, and then be invited often to stay for parties, swingers' parties. "
Interesting client development strategy. This beats the golf outings.

Anyone else remember it this way? (They/he did "Mary's Prayer," which made the otherwise excellent Something About Mary soundtrack.)
|
You are correct, sir.
Top 40 radio developed a brief crush on Danny Wilson in the late '80s. Formed in Dundee, Scotland, Danny Wilson shared the same pop sensibilities as compatriots the Big Dish, the Blue Nile, and Deacon Blue. Singer Gary Clark's breathy, yearning vocals on 1987's "Mary's Prayer" earned the group its first — and only — hit stateside, but the band slowly amassed a cult following that usually develops with artists possessing timeless songwriting abilities. Formed by Clark, his brother Kit Clark, and percussionist Ged Grimes, Danny Wilson was signed to Virgin Records in 1985. Two years later, the group released their debut LP, Meet Danny Wilson. The single "Mary's Prayer" peaked at number three in the U.K. in 1988, and it was a surprise success in America as well.
Named after the 1952 Frank Sinatra film Meet Danny Wilson, Danny Wilson was obviously enamored of '60s soul and Steely Dan's cool, sophisticated arrangements. Consequently, the band's retro sound never fit in with the U.K. rock scene of the late '80s, although they were often compared to Prefab Sprout, another group that defied contemporary trends and featured a singer with a velvety voice. "Second Summer of Love" also landed on the British charts in 1989; however, after their follow-up album Bebop Moptop, Danny Wilson broke up and Gary Clark went solo. In 1993, Clark recorded Ten Short Songs About Love. He then formed the short-lived King L, releasing Great Day for Gravity in 1995. Clark joined former King L member Eric Pressly (bass) and female singer Keeley Hawkes in Transister, creating a completely different sound with hard-edged guitars and samples on their 1997 self-titled album. But, by 2000, he was no longer with them. In 2001, Clark co-wrote and produced tracks on Natalie Imbruglia's White Lilies Island. — Michael Sutton

Tying threads together, Linda Perry, rock abomination and lead singer/shreiker of 4 Non Blondes, co-wrote most of the songs on Pink's last album. This is why I hate Pink.
Of course, I like the mash-up "Let's Get This Supernaut Started" which takes the vocals from "Let's Get This Party Started" and puts them over Black Sabbath's "Supernaut." Two great tastes that taste great together.
I only know half of Aloha Mr. Learned Hand's bands off the top of my (Murray) Head.

DMB -- Everyone's "Local" Band
Judging from the volume of email, pm, and im I have received, everyone in college or law school in the early 90s in the south thought DMB was omnipresent in their town.
They must have logged a ton of miles south of the Mason-Dixon.
I still don't like their music, though I appreciate their work ethic.

So instead, I'll mention that VH1 is polling for a greatest one-hit wonders show:VH1 Poll
So, vote, and quit yer yawpin when some shite is determined to be the #1 one-hit wonder.
Question for the field: Why is Midnight Oil a one-hit wonder (Beds are Burning)? Sure, they were never the most popular band, but they produced several good albums. It's far different from, e.g., Dexy's Midnight Runners (nominated by me) or Modern English (nominated by me), who never got airplay for any other song than their one hit.
|
I'm so nominating U2.
Is it too early to suggest that OMC will be a one hit wonder?

Obscure Band Poll

S(guess it doesn't matter too much since they hung it up for good last year)D

Many of my college friends loved the Mother Hips.
Few on this board would be surprised to learn that I have seen many obscure bands.
Has anyone heard of...
Suddenly Tammy!
Wolfgang Press
Lawsuit (played a fraternity brother's wedding)
Grandaddy
Tha 'Liks (formerly tha Alkaholiks)
I saw Soul Coughing, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Catherine Wheel, Afghan Whigs, Luscious Jackson, Urge Overkill, and Redd Kross. The guys from TtWS were all very cool, normal guys. I remember at a concert in '92 (typing this immediately made me feel like a caricature), they made some comment about preferring Clinton to Bush, then offered equal time to a young Republican (whose rebuttal turned into a Dana Carvey-esque impersonation).
I saw Cake in a small club and would have bet my student loan debt that they would never have been played on the radio/MTV. When Low opened for Soul Coughing, M. Doughty chastised the crowd for not digging them more. When I saw Hole open for The Lemonheads, Courtney Love cracked that she knew that heckler because he gave her syphillis. I saw Julianna Hatfield muse that she'd rather be at the Supergrass show across town (me too). For some reason, I even saw Squirrel Nut Zippers after their song "In the Afterlife" was long forgotten. (They're good live, actually.) I saw Charlie Hunter as part of T.J. Kirk playing James Brown. Nine times out of ten, I've enjoyed myself at live shows.
I wish I was in Texas to see The White Stripes tonight. They're fantastic live.

Not at all... Very catchy song. Hoping Rhino puts it on the inevitable 7-CD 90's Pop Culture Box Set...

My favorite bit on the entire "I love the 80s" VH1 special is Michael Ian Black (from Ed, the State, etc.) talking about Rick Astley, and singing:
"I'm a little whiiiiite boy, with a big blaaaack voice."
Hilarious. His performance on those specials is in the pantheon.

That is so bizarre. I was JUST thinking that, and then you posted it. That was so hilarious.
I loved all those I love the 80's shows. My favorite was where a bunch of celebs said how they thought that Teddy Ruxpin was satanic.

Excellent! You must be a child of the 80's - you really know your 80's music!
Major 80's geek. The "Politics of Dancing" was the only one I didn't know off the top of my head... used process of elimination. The quiz was a tad too easy... here are a few slightly harder ones:
1. Tarzan Boy
2. Life in a Northern Town
3. One Night in Bangkok
4. Mexican Radio
5. Love Plus One
6. Talk Talk
(PS, Taco was a solo act... German, I think.)
|
Here's a few for you, 90s style:
1. Sex and Candy
2. Groove is in the Heart
3. Rebirth of Slick
4. Where Have All the Cowboys Gone
5. Flake
6. Song 2

1 Hit Wonders

Ditto Men at Work, incidentally, who had much more interesting material than just "Down Under."

Men at Work could fairly be categorized as a "2 Album Wonder," though I believe there was a 3d album that pretty much killed their career. Too bad because Business as Usual and Cargo were tremendous. I know few people who didn't have them and love them. Business as Usual was just about the first contemporary album I had and loved. That and Let's Dance were 1 and 1A. I saw Men at Work at Toad's Place in 1998/99. Colin Hay literally said "Hello. It's great to be in your town." One of the funniest moments of my life. Did anyone see the Scrubs with Overkill playing for the first 3 minutes? Brilliant.
Favorite Men at Work songs:
1. Overkill
2. Down Under
3. Who Can it Be Now
4. Be Good Johnny
5. Down by the Sea
1.

3. Diggable Planets
4. Paula Cole
Song 2 is the "Woo Hoo" song, right??
