sidd, 'member that time when we stole that jug o' wine from the homeless guy on telegraph, and then drank the whole thing before we had to turn in our torts final? that shit was gooooood. and we still double-h'd it. so sweet. much better than that homemade mexican wine we bought from that roadside fruit stand, huh? both were reds, no?

Rodney Strong is all right but certianly not a top choice. If you have limited time, skip it.

GO to Arvida if you can. There is also a fantastic place just up the road that begins with a B. Those two places are top flight.

Huh. Well that is certainly discouraging that Valley of the Moon was so bad when you visited. They had a really nice pinot grigio when I was there, though admittedly that was in 2003 or so, and I think they were then showing their 2000 vintage, so maybe it was a fluke good year?

I'll have to look for Arvida next time I hit wine country.

Regarding cheeses, I would like to put in my recommendation to folks to not try rosemary-crusted manchego. The slice I tasted in the cheesemonger's shop was lovely. Upon taking it home and trying any morsel within a half-inch of the rosemary, it tasted like ass. Waaaaay too much herb for my taste.

My wife came across one of these whilst tending the garden the other day. By her own account she let it slink away without making so much as a sharp intake of breath, and for this I am quite proud of her. Had it been me, we would have seen the advent of Attican pantshitting.

Before you rush to assure me, yes, I now know there are no coral snakes in California and this is a mimic species. But that took 20 minutes of google-fu to discover, by which time the Attican pants would have been well-shat already.

If there are no coral snakes in California, where is the evolutionary advantage in looking like one? Chinaski will be along any moment now to point out that this is just another piece of evidence for intelligent design.

Evolutionary advantage would not require corals and kingsnakes to have coextensive geographic range. Rather, it would merely require that both live within the geographic range of one or more mutual predators.
Color pattern mimicry may have occurred in the past when its ancestors' distribution overlapped the distribution of coral snakes.
Maybe a female Coast Mountain Kingsnake visited family in the Deep South 10 million years ago and let a handsome young colored fellow get her into trouble.

Wouldn't it be better for the Kingsnake if the red touched the yellow? Or might that be bad because then corals wouold try and mate with them- like how we kept warning Club about notme?

Also why would color mimicry help survival? Anything that knows red/yellow/black was venomous would be dead wouldn't it?

A "friend" I know once came across a similar snake on the golf course. This "friend" thought it would be amusing to pick up such snake, and throw it at his playing partner. This "friend" was right, it was amusing.
