Austin is filled with mispronounced names. The most irritating is "may-ner" Road, which anywhere else would be Manor. A close second is "Gwa-da-loop-ay" which for Guadalupe is wrong in both English and Spanish.
When I first moved here, I was extremely actively encouraged (in the true fascist sense) to both lose my accent and mispronounce names so that my clients could understand me.
My mother is so proud at my ability to use "all y'all" correctly in a sentence.

These freaking morons seriously thought that if they walked around "correctly" pronouncing the name of the town for a few years while they were in school, all of the locals would bow down and thank them for bringing enlightenment and showing them the way.
Can you tell that I feel strongly about this?

I don't know why. When people pronounce Houston street, "Hueston Street," we don't get all pissed off and bent out of shape, even if they're from Houston. I stopped correcting people long ago, satisfied that they will look like fools when mispronouncing it around town. That's not good enough for you down South?

I stand with you on the San Felipe thing.
Of course, I am originally from New Mexico, and the pronunications I have heard from pretentious tourists from the East coast would make your blood boil.
I admit it took me a while to get used to the local pronunciation of San Jacinto.

I don't care if people pronounce things incorrectly and I try not to correct people's pronunciations b/c I always feel like a flaming asshole when I do. But I hate when people who don't know what they're talking about try to correct my pronunciation.
Would it annoy you if you were talking about Houston street to someone visiting N.Y. and they smiled condescendingly at you and corrected your pronunciation? And then told you how "cute" your accent is?

Cite, please. Where's Sony fit in? Is Hughes part of Sony? My HDTiVo IS sweet, but I'm on number 2 already, and I fear that I may be on number 3 soon. That $8/month to DirecTV for the equipment plan is paying off in this case.
