So you'd give up the smart, hot, intelligent woman gig to be ... vacant rich skank?

Is it all the fault of having a job? Of course not, but I don't think work has led to a net increase in the diversity, interest and quantity of my friends. Sometimes a drink or dinner a couple times a year is enough, sometimes when you finally get together for that drink you discover that you have become total strangers.

Which raises a good point. How did you meet your very best (non-spouse) friends?
Coltrane's buddies are probably the guys he met in school. I'm thinking probably college.
My best friends are from the 'hood. Grade school, high school and a few from college.
Good friends are ones met in law school. A few from work.

In a word, yes. I think it'd be much easier to be a vacant rich skank. And the hours are better.

Stop complaining about men. I'm sure you are capable of finding yourself a rich idiot with a medicine chest full of viagra who will make your dreams come true.

I'll jet set with you.
I'm reminded that when I got home last night, the TV was on and Extra or some other Hollywood gossip show came on and Nicole Ritchie was giving a tour of her 10 bedroom manse, which included a huge workout room (which appeared to have never been touched) and a salon with 2 bonnet hairdryers. I could be her bestest friend and she'd hardly ever see me in that place and I'd at least make sure that the workout equipment got used.

Well yes, we probably could do the math, but only
a. someone with absolutely nothing better to do, or;
b. a psychopath with a propensity for stalking
would bother.
Take your pick.

Best, nursery/grade school. Some good friends from college/law school/work though. The bonus of having pals who've known you for 20-odd years is that you never have to explain anything. The downside is that this can be a bit intimidating to SOs who know these folks have met/scrutinized/hung out with anyone you've ever dated.

I'm afraid, BRC, that you miss the point. Not ever working is different from not ever having to work. I learned this last night on It's Good to be... The Hilton Sisters on E!
They never have HAD to work, yet they have worked because it makes them more complete people. For example, Paris has acted in several movies (along with, of course, The Simple Life) and modeled (free clothes!). Nicki designs purses and is making gazillions of dollars off of the Japanese market for her handbags. And they are starting to catch on in America too!! Paris jumped on the bandwagon there and is now selling a jewelry line (including tiaras!) to the Japanese suckers, er, public.
What I determined after spending a half hour hearing about their lives is that it is, in fact, good to be the Hilton sisters.

Fascinating.
Almost all of my friends are people I met socially at one point or another in my life. They are rarely former classmates or work friends -- since those are people who became my friends as a result of geography rather than mutual interest.

Sometimes, when I hear how some of you spend what free time you have, I wonder how life altering not having the constraints of a job truly would be.

It sounds, from this, like it would also be good to be Monica Lewinsky.

Whoa, in a keanu-like way. So are you suggesting that when I finally screw up enough courage to anonymously post my "I'm a married guy in love with a gal who makes me feel like I am the Frank Sinatra to her Mia Farrow, or the Gene Rayburn to her Joanne Worley," I should pretend to not have kids? Or am I classified as married without kids because all y'all are convinced that the Not Bobette is a literary device?
And RotAF, kid or no kid, the counseling advice given by ncs is still valid.

Honey, I can smell the stench of you all over your socks so I dont see why an FBA would be any different. Who even knows the password to it anyway?
