Yeah OK. But I would like to get my hands on some of that profit when gas prices are high.
The Federalist society today announed a new conference:
"The Legacy of the DOJ under Attorney General Edwin Meese, III"
Was there any other legacy, besides watching hours upon hours of porn at DOJ headquarters, that I am unaware of?

John Ashcroft?
BTW, what happened to the libertarian side of the Federalist Society? Are they up in New England joining the American Constitution Society?

No, this is the argument about what the argument was about. It's a meta thing.

Part of his argument is that through the printing press and newspapers, people came to see themselves as parts of a larger communities than they had before. Obviously, ethnic bonds can do something of the same thing. This might suggest why nationalism is less of a strong force in some of the areas you've been talking about.

I assume you mean because people can't read? That is a good point. Did he make the point that newspapers etc. solidified national languages geographically? In other words, when you left Paris the language slowly evolved until you reached Madrid. There was a slow change the whole way. The introduction of the newspaper made it so one language ended and the other started at the border and the languages congealed with in the national borders. It is my understanding that radio and then TV made these distinctions even more pronounced (an Irish guy in my law firm in Japan told me this. He spoke Gaelic, and not surprisingly, he was very distressed by all the languages around the world that were dying).
So without TV, radio, and books, it is much harder for nationalism to take hold. And these are all in short supply outside of Kandahar.

Did John Ashcroft spend a lot of time watching porn? Not that that would surprize me, I just didn't realize that that was public knowledge.
BTW: try not to puke when I say this, but Ashcroft has been for a while, and still continues, to make feelers through out the California Republican Party about a potential presidential run.

The Spanky Group.
SAM, GGG, Cletus, Ty, Hank and Sarge (or whoever is present and wants to put in their two cents.
This is the first installment of the Spanky group (much improved version of the McClaughlin Group).
1) Tibet and East Turkestan, stay part of China forever? if not when do they peel off?
2) What is the future of the borders of central Asia? Focused on Afghanistan.
3) Does Arabia ever unite?
4) When Iran developes its nuclear arsenal does Israel hit them with coventional or nuclear warheads? How does Iran respond?
5) Does Belgium ever split? If it does do the Flemmish join the Netherlands and the Waloons France or do we just get two new countries?
6) Does Kosovo ever merge with Albania?
7) Once Iraqi Kurdistan declares its independence, does Turkey invade?
8) If I torture Slave enough will he throw another party reasonbly soon?

I went to school with his daughter. She was very nice, smart, proper (at least in dress - can't speculate beyond that).

I'm sure Meese did more than watch porn. In fact, he did, which was to espouse views that John Ashcroft seemed to reflect fairly closely in his role as AG.

A couple of years ago the Ashcroft people were trying to engineer the party rules (and state laws) so that the Presidential primary in California would change from a primary to a decision made by the California Republican Party Central Committee (about 1400 delegates - 75% are strong social conservatives). Ashcroft thought this was a good way to secure California.
Cutting them off at the pass took about three weeks of my life which I will never get back.
Thanks Johnny.

Darn you Spanky!
Hilary Clinton vs. John Ashcroft would be a thing of beauty.
[As a steel-cage Death Match, if not an election.]
