It's good to see someone talking about Cossacks and Ottomans today.
I was also thinking about how it's really not quite right to think of the Ottomans as a "Turkish" empire (Attaturk certainly didn't think they were); while Ottoman family itself was Turkish, and the very early Ottoman state was overwhelmingly Turkish, the bureaucracy was deliberately mutli-ethnic, with each different power center (Islamic hierarchy, local governors, council members, military, harem) traditionally drawing from different groups.

You don't have the balls for that kind of humor.

Early exit for Edwards?

Sorry if someone else posted this and I missed it, but Edwards denies this story categorically:
- "The January 19th Variety article is erroneous. Senator Edwards did not say nor does he believe that the greatest short-term threat to world peace is the possibility that Israel would bomb Iran's nuclear facilities. Senator Edwards said, as he has in the past, that Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon is one of the greatest short-term threats to world peace."

The Edwards campaign disputes a report by Peter Bart that I alluded to yesterday, but Bart isn't backing down:
John Edwards' presidential campaign wants to make it clear that he doesn't consider Israel a threat to world peace.
Columnist Peter Bart reports that Edwards told a Hollywood fundraiser last month that the possibility that Israel would bomb Iran's nuclear facilities is perhaps the greatest short-term threat to world peace.
Edwards' spokesman Jonathan Prince says the article is erroneous. He says Edwards says one of the greatest short-term threats to world peace is Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Bart says Variety stands by its report. The host of the fundraiser, Adam Venit of the Endeavor talent agency, didn't respond to a message seeking comment.

If a YouTube clip contradicts Edwards, that would sink his campaign, I'm thinking. Otherwise, I don't think the story hurts him.

True.
Pictures of his new house, juxtiposed with his "Two Americas" stump speech, will be the final nail in the coffin.

If you want a good history, try Osman's Dream, which came out a year or two ago.
Once you get over the idea of each newly crowned Sultan strangling all his brothers on his ascension to the throne, it's all pretty readable.

The Economist and Paul Samuelson question Free Trade

What point? The point that some people lose because of free trade. I addressed that. In a free market the less efficient always lose out. The key to keeping the economy strong is not to let the less efficient players get enough political clout so they can keep the economy less efficient and thereby protect their own interests at the expense of the rest of us. Just as it was not in the makers of wagon wheels' interest to have trains and auto come along, and it was in their interest to try and get the government to make all such forms of transportation illegal, it was the responsiblity of everyone else that had the interest of the nation in mind to resist such efforts. Just as free trade hurts a minority but overwhelmingly benefits the country, it is important that we don't let the minority hamper free trade for their benefit at the expense of the majority of citizens, and at the expense our nation's future.

I have actually read a lot about the Ottoman empire in Pan-Turkism (Landau) and "Sons of the Conquerers" (Pope) but I still don't know much about the Cossacks. Do you have a good book that focuses on the Cossaks?

Nope - what I've picked up has been in books about their neighbors - I know Riasonovsky's History of Russia talks about them, a bunch of Ottoman histories (including Osman's Dream) talk about them, and you bump into them in historys of Hungary, Poland and the Hapsburg Empire. If you find one, let me know.
I've also always wanted to find a good book on the Avars and Pechenegs.
