Heh, come to think of it, it was middle school. I made some OK but stupid mouse pillow, and hated cooking more than anything else. In HS further home ec was, I think, a one-semester option to IA (which I took). We did basic woodworking, wiring and glass cutting for doors and windows. I think we had to put together some mechanical thing, too, but I don't remember what. I remember I liked the band saw.

Any commentary?
I just wait 'til everything comes to our local second-run movie house so as to resist temptation (not that I'm remotely tempted by 'cheez product' nachos or monster grease-glazed pretzels--just Raisinettes). This way, I am forced to have only air-popped popcorn (real butter optional) or, at worst, a latte and a really spectacular biscotti.

Viva cheap tiny-screened theaters!

Cooking AND sewing? Oh, the abomination!

In junior high school, they tricked us into taking home economics by renaming it "home and career skills." We spent most of our time learning how to write out checks properly and mocking the gracious "southern belle" mannerisms of the instructor.

You know DS, and I think I speak for everyone when I say, you really should not use this board for specific complaints regarding your sex life with the Mr.

Speaking of being shocked-SHOCKED!-that something wasn't as healthy as I thought it was, I recently discovered that the Rt 44 Cherry Limeade at Sonic is 454 calories. A coke of the same size is 364 calories. I was devistated when I found out how bad not ordering a coke and getting the cherry limeade instead was. I tell myself that at least I was preserving bone density. The addition of the cherry is what kills the drink (and, of course, adds to the drink). Regular limeade was only (ha) 380 calories.

BTW, when I went to verify these numbers, I googled and found a cool site called www.dietfacts.com that looks like it goes through a lot of fast food, grocery brand names, and other foods and finds out the dietary information. They even unofficially translate the food item into the weight watcher points system, and they indicate why a particular food may be bad for you (in the case of my formerly beloved Rt 44 Cherry Limeade, carbohydrates) . Very cursory look at the site, but so far it looks good.

Yes. Back in the day, we used to make out or go down on each other in the theater. It is sad that kids these days just want to stuff themselves (with food).

I tried to bring sushi in to a movie theater when I went to see Matrix Reloaded. The movie usher dude took offense to the fact that I didn't want to pay $6.00 for a car-door sized box of sno-caps. Who the fuck would want to eat that many sno-caps? I'm good after about, um, 3. I know that theaters make a freaking killing on the food they sell, but are the margins so bad that they couldn't offer a regular size serving of ju-ju fruits?

I knew someone would take the bait; I admit I am surprised it was you.

Though your increasingly transparent fascination with anything having to do with sex and the Mr. is interesting. Halle doesn't strike me as the type to act as your beard.

But it's kind of about education as well. I can read all kinds of stuff that tells me what is good and bad to eat because I am educated and know where to look. Someone that is not educated may have no idea that he is purchasing crap. The answer is that he should educate himself but I don't think that's realistic or fair.
If you are really a beginner at the cooking game, or if you are a decent cook who wants to know more about the science and technique of cooking, I recomend you buy "I'm Just Here for the Food," by Alton Brown.

The book is broken down into chapters on various methods of cooking, e.g., braising, roasting, frying, etc. It has a few recipes, but is built more around discussion of method that can be adapted to whatever ingredients you choose. If you own one book on cooking, this should be the one.

Ah, I miss those. My local theater doesn't actually serve Milk Duds anymore, which should be flatly criminal. They have candy like "Hulk sours" and stuff. Whatever.

Big pockets and thought-out containers, I'm told, solve most of those "usher" problems. Though, admittedly, the most outlandish thing I've tried to sneak in is a Rite-Aid bought bag of twizzlers and a seltzer water.

I think it's Americans' penchant for 'getting a good deal' that we mistakenly transfer from clothes to food. When a small size of movie jujubes is already $5, and you can double the volume for just another $1, we pig out so we don't feel like we're getting ripped off quite as much.

On the plus side, they recently installed wider seats at my local theater to accommodate fast-growing audience butts--makes for much comfier relaxing for the rest of us.

I refuse to look at this site. The wounds from running a report on the "Pets" category in Quicken are still too fresh.

At the risk of sounding like a 6 year old girl, I want to be a vet when I grow up.

Oh, and I want a horse for Christmas.

How else am I going to make the sex jokes with you? I cannot separate the two of you in my mind long enough to come up with anything funny that doesn't involve him.

Would it out you if I asked if you actually ARE Alanis Morissette?

Hmm, fair enough. He is sort of my better half.
