Novak on the Swiftvets
http://www.townhall.com/columnists/r...20040809.shtml
Quote:
The "band of brothers" was organized by Kerry, according to this book. It tells of a 2003 telephone call to Adm. Roy Hoffmann, who commanded swift boats in Vietnam, telling him he was running for president. Hoffmann, mistakenly thinking it was former Sen. Bob Kerrey, "responded enthusiastically." Once the admiral realized it was John Kerry, "he declined to give Kerry his support." Hoffmann is quoted as saying, "I do not believe John Kerry is fit to be commander in chief of the armed forces of the United States."
"Unfit for Command" sends a devastating message, unless effectively refuted. Perhaps most disturbing are allegations that Kerry's combat decorations are unjustified. His first Purple Heart, the book alleges, was accidentally self-inflicted. His commander, Grant Hibbard, is quoted as saying: "I didn't recommend him for a Purple Heart. Kerry probably wrote up the paperwork and recommended himself." Full release of documents demanded by his critics could settle this claim quickly if it is unwarranted.

Ahem. Mr. Novak presently lacks the moral authority to make this particular suggestion.

Max Sawicky on the swift veterans:
- Some time back I spoke of the devaluation of military service. I referred to veterans who used their service for purposes of cheap exploitation or unseemly self-promotion, like Ollie North, for instance. The so-called “Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth,” a transparent pack of liars, are today’s poster children. Hey fellas, if you want to poop all over the notion of patriotic service to one’s country, that’s your choice; but now your own abasement deprives you of any moral ballast for your own politics.

Me, I don't worry about this none, for not only have we seen these types of nut jobs before (i.e., there is nothing new under the sun), but remember too that the race is not to the swift.

This seems to be exactly what Novak is referring to. All "defences" of the Kerry record thus far have been ad hominem attacks. I hope that this stuff isn't true, and would like to see the defense made. This isn't just one yokul making the charges, it is over 200 former swiftees.
And for the record, the folks at Fox News do not believe there is a story here.

More than 200 former swifties, exactly one of whom "served with" Kerry in the sense of being on his boat. Oddly, those who "served with" him in this more literal sense are on board with Kerry.
After eight years of muckraking exposes involving former Arkansas Highway Patrolmen, melon shooting, and the like, I think we all recognize the odor coming from the swift boat crowd. When Myers and McCain say they're troubled, I'll start paying attention. As it is, paying closer attention to what this crowd is saying will only leave me feeling unclean.

This website* has an EC map that allows you to click on any of the elections since 1980 to use a springboard for your own projections. Click a state to change its color, and watch the totals change.
*Thanks, PBS! You've earned your keep in my book!

True, but there are many who witness the saving of Rassman. There are also many who were his commanding officers and doctors.
This is not a republican attack. Yes, there is some republican funding, but several of the swiftees are democrats.

further annals of nationbuilding
No peeps here from conservatives when the Iraqi government shut down Al Jazeera for saying unhappy things. (Envy, maybe?):
- Hoshyar Zibari accused Aljazeera, along with other Arabic language satellite channels, of “incitement” and hiding behind media freedoms.
Zibari said the channel’s coverage of Iraq was “one-sided” and “distorted”.
He made the comments in an interview with an Aljazeera correspondent during an offcial visit to Moscow on Sunday.
“They [Aljazeera and other Arabic channels] have all become incitement channels which are against the interests of security, the Iraqi government and the Iraqi people,” Zibari said.
He added “the new Iraqi government will not tolerate these kinds of intentional breaches and violations”.

One small step back for Al Jazeera, one giant leap backward for democracy in Iraq.

You should be wary of getting too far ahead. If I were you, I'd wait till someone gets 4000 posts before crossing the 5000 line. Just a suggestion.

I'm trying to decide whether the observation of you being at 3800+ yourself, and therefore being likely to solve Ty's little problem all on your own, is a whiff.
Probably is.

I would never compare myself with Ty. I'm like flannery o'connor. and Ty's my faulkner. In an interview after completing Wise Blood she was asked if she thought she was becoming an important southern voice:
Well you know, a few of us are trying to haul people around on our little train engines, but we still all have to get off the tracks when the big steam engine comes barreling through.
