My sister in the bay area got her car, housing, roommate and job through craigslist, and I used it to get rid of a lot of crap before I moved. Houston just got on board with craigslist and it's not up to speed yet, but traffic increases daily.

Loving your fellow (wo)man, asian or otherwise, is not dehumanizing but rather a celebration of your humanity.

Celebrate good times, get it on!

Gunman Opens Fire in City Council Chambers; At Least 2 Are Wounded
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

EW YORK -- A gunman opened fire inside the City Council chambers Wednesday afternoon during a routine hearing, wounding at least two people. Police were still searching for the shooter.

At least a dozen shots echoed across the second floor of the landmark lower Manhattan building, with reporters diving for cover beneath their desks one floor below as the hall's rotunda filled with screams.

The shooter was one of about 100 people in the balcony inside the second-floor council chambers when the gunfire began after 2 p.m, according to eyewitnesses.

"I looked up, and I saw someone shooting downward," said City Council member David Yassky. A security guard returned fire, according to Yassky.

Police sought a man in a blue suit in connection with the shooting, which continued for about three minutes. Mayor Michael Bloomberg was in his office but was not harmed, said his spokesman, Edward Skyler.

Two victims were rushed from the front of the building on stretchers and loaded into ambulances.

Police officers, including some in riot gear, were seen running across the plaza in front of the building once the shooting stopped. It was not immediately known if the shooter was captured.

The City Council was holding a meeting on Wednesday, but it was unclear if the shooting was related to the session.

The entrances and exits to the building were sealed off, and a stretcher was rushed inside by police in flak jackets.

O, Canada! O, the humanity!

Teen thugs throw rocks at baby ducklings; then stone man who intervened to stop them.

Down here, it would probably be turned into a fundraiser at the county fair, but I was told this type of thing didn't go on in Canada.

Interesting. 100 people, reporters, security guards and police - and no one caught this guy?

CNN was reporting that some people think that the second person down was the shooter - shot by a security guard.

Now.....Wondering how he got into the building since most New York government buildings (city, state, fed) are all guarded by security forces and metal detectors.

According to CNN, the gunman was shot, so it sounds like they caught one person.

Kids who torment animals ought to be preemptively locked up and thrown into intense counseling. They inevitably turn into the kids-from-good-families-who-ended-up-in-prison.

I particularly hate people who are deliberately mean to animals. Little freaks.

I just spoke with my hubby who is home watching the news and here is what he reports --

Two people were removed on stretchers and, according to him, they were "being worked on." The news is now saying that the two are not police. At least one city council member (Davis?) is reported among those who were shot (in the chest according to one officer on the scene). It looks like 3 or 4 people have been shot.

There is mention that a rally is taking place across the street in opposition to the smoking ban. Nobody has drawn a connection but they did mention it.

Bad guy got away. NYC's finest are looking for him right now. Apparently bridges were shut down but we are now being told that there is no reason to believe that this is terrorist-related.

that's all for now.

I'm not sure why people are under this impression. I think people in Canada are just as violent as anywhere else - not as much access to guns, so not as many shootings, but people kill and beat each other up just the same there as in other places. Apparently way back when we burned down the White House twice. (Not really something to be proud of). I guess someone did a good PR job at some point about our peacefulness.

There is a rally against the smoking ban? I love it. THe first thing New Yorkers get political about is tobacco. Bloomberg is not gonna be stoked about walking out of his office into a huge cloud of smoke.

Having been witness to (or directly involved in ) a number of bar brawls in "the 51st State," I can attest to the fact that those crazy canucks can be some violent motherfuckers. The Ontario Provincial Police also do not go out of their way to make you comfortable (regardless of your nationality). Canucks do, however, have some great laws about how much rust one can have on a car and still drive it on the streets which I always found to be way cool in contrast to the fucking rust-bucket death-traps permitted to cruise the roadways in NY.

And, assuming that nobody dies, it would be kinda cool to know that the shooter was a dude who was just pissed off that he couldn't have a smoke at lunch and went trigger-happy in a nic-fit kinda way.
