I dig the sprouts. But there is a side effect from them thats not too pleasant...

That's why I asked. Half of my family falls on the "detest" side and the other half falls in the "rapture" side. I just got the annual call from my mother asking me which alternative side I wanted given my well-documented aversion to Brussels sprouts. I suggested grilled radiccio.

There is no Brussels sprouts middle ground.

Incidently, my mother tried to woo me over to the dark side with promises of Brussels spouts sauteed with a pound of chopped pancetta. I could hear her salivating over the phone.

Sliced and oven roasted, then toosed lightly with olive oil and sherry or balsamic vinegar, yes. Alternatively, separated into individual leaves (easier than you think; just slicce off the bottoms and blanch in boiling water for a minute or two) and sauteed in butter with some garlic and sage.

Because I know you're all dying to know

I've pretty much firmly decided on the side dishes I'm bringing for Thanksgiving dinner.

1. Blanched green beans with brown butter & hazelnuts (Cook's Illustrated recipe; very easy and I have the stuff on hand, living here in filbert central).

2. Spinach/cabbage gratin (recipe was in the paper last week, for black kale gratin; again, I'm using what I have on hand).

3. Mashed sweet potatoes topped with toasted pecans (Cook's Illustrated again)

For desserts:

1. Libby's label pumpkin pie

2. Pumpkin cream cheese pie (Fugee's recipe--I can make it a day ahead, can't I?)

3. Triple chocolate cookies (Cook's Illustrated encore)

After Thanksgiving, I'll start making my Blue Ribbon (tm) fudge and caramels to give to friends. New this year: fudge with roasted hazelnuts (I bought 10 lbs at Saturday's farmers' market).

Also, and this may be like your mom's pancetta thing, shred them and cook in bacon grease and then add little bits of bacon. Yummy.

Mustard cream sauce? I think I might need that in my life. Would it also work with asparagus?
