How do you know?

<Leagl,

Here's a question. A few weeks ago I'm at a bar with some work acquaintances. The group is discussing a person at work who no one likes. A clearly gay friend of a coworker asks me why no one likes this person who's being discussed. I, not thinking at all, say "He's a cocksucker". I assume that comment is not offensive, but being overly analytical when bored, I wonder... Is it rude to use a slang word for a gay male sex act as an insult in the presence of gay dudes? I guess you could make the case that "cocksucker" is also offensive to straight women.

Now that is an interesting question. I am not sure of the answer. But my answer would be it depends on how you say it and how you mean it. If you meant people didn't like him because he was gay (and therefore one assumes in every state but Texas where they like gay people just fine but not what they do, that he sucks cocks) that would be offensive on another level.

But I know that isn't what you meant. I don't hear too many of my gay male friends use the term cocksucker as an insult that I can recall, but I am not sure I have listened for it. I'll have to keep my ears open.

I'm not sure that they would take it with any greater offense as long as it was clear you weren't saying it because he is gay. Depends on the guy I suppose.
