New iMac due in September

"iMac Availability
Apple has stopped taking orders for the current iMac as we begin the transition from the current iMac line to an all-new iMac line which will be announced and available in September. We planned to have our next generation iMac ready by the time the inventory of current iMacs runs out in the next few weeks, but our planning was obviously less than perfect. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers."

From the horse's mouth.

Apple's supply chain management is embarrasingly poor.

Yes. Dell they are not.

Ultra Computers

Cool. I think I want one. 4x6 and about 1 lb.

New, even smaller laptops are hitting the market. The key word here is smaller. Much smaller. Call them ultra-portables. I’ve told you about the OQO (coming soon, I’m promised). Then there’s the Vulcan FlipStart from one of Paul Allen’s companies.

But first to hit the market are Sony Vaio’s U50 and U70 palmtop-sized computers. Some markets, anyway. Not technically this one. While the U-series computers have been released in a number of places, they're only available in the United States through specialized importers.

These are real Windows XP computers, but they do look and sometimes feel like PDAs, particularly when it comes to size: At 6.6 by 4.3 by 1.0 inches, each weighs little more than a pound.

You can buy the U70 at Dynamism for a cool $2799...

DVD slideshows?

Anyone ever burned photos/slides onto DVD? I'd like to scan all my family's slides, and have them in a format where they can be watched like a traditional slideshow, ie., forwarding to each individually. Would some kind of Powerpoint-to-DVD software be best? Or is there a better alternative. I'm not at all interested in special effects or music or creative cuts.

I have, but it was a Mac using iPhoto and iDVD and therefore my experience won't be helpful, except to say this: do not let the existence of the DVD change your attitude toward the original slides. Archivists are tearing their hair out at the trend toward all-digital archives --- the file and media formats we're using today will probably be unreadable in 20 years, while the slides themselves will never be obsolete.

We're still watching the Kennedy clan on Super8, but in another 10 years all our VHS tapes of our kids will be degraded beyond recognition. Even sadder are the people who converted their parents' old Super8 reels to VHS and threw them away because they'd figured they'd never need them again.

No plans to get rid of them, but the reason for transferring them, besides ease of viewing, is that some of them are deteriorating--I think they weren't processed very well to start out with. Even in the 1970s and 1980s, slides were starting to die out.

As Atticus alludes, iPhoto and iDVD on the mac are your best alternative. I'm sure there's PC software that's 80% as functional, and should do as you ask. The Mac combo turned out a great disc for me recently, with a movie and several slide shows.

The biggest time suck, however, will be scanning the slides.

Hemp Desk

I love my help desk. Everyone goes home at 5:00. Then whenever I send an email, I get a rejection for six people whose blackberrys are full.

I send a message to the Hemp desk and get the following response:

PLEASE STOP THIS!

Very Dumb Question

If I am going to be staying in a hotel that has "high speed internet access via Ethernet" and I have a laptop, can I use that? How do I make it go?

Do you plug your laptop into your office network? If so, it's the same thing. Just take an ethernet cable with you (looks like a phone line, but the connector at the end is bigger).

If you don't, you need to make sure the notebook is ethernet able. Some notebooks (especially newer ones) have integrated ethernet ports. They look like the modem port, but bigger. If there is no integrated ethernet port, you'll need an ethernet card. These are pretty cheap and installation takes about five minutes.

You'll also want to make sure your computer has some sort of firewall software running (which it should have anyway). The various antivirus manufacturers have packages that include firewalls, so if you have say Norton, you can upgrade cheap. You should do this regardless of whether you decide it's too much of a PITA to take your laptop with you on this trip.

When you get to the hotel, there will be instructions next to the port as to how to use their system. The hotel I regularly stay at on business trips does everything automatically. You plug in, and when you open up a web browser, it intervenes and asks for your room number. Once you've entered that, it is invisible.
