why? The golf thing is stretching the comparison, but then again, not really.

There are a couple of scenarios:

1. You have a not serious relationship. You have threesomes. No one really caress about feelings. Teh sex is good and interesting. Sooner or later the relationship breaks or not, but its all good one way or the other.

2. You have a relationship that at its core is not serious. You talk about sex with a third person. Something that gets said or done in the pursuit of such sex, offends one or the other and you break up. I posit that is not so much because of the sex or the pursuit of sex, but because the relationship was inherently flawed on other levels (possibly, probably, not quite truly open communication on what was going on with the sex).

3. You have a relationship that is serious at its core. You decide to open the sex part, but you do so (a) without fully exploring the range of feelings that result; and relatedly (b) without being fully committed to the idea that sex is just sex, akin to golf or any other physicial pursuit. That is a recipe for trouble.

4. You have a serious relationship. You decide, mutually, based on open communication and examination of your mutual feelings, to open the sex up. You agree that sex is just sex. You do it. Its fine. Like playing golf on a really good course other than your country club.

Of course there are permutations of all the above. Why is that analysis senile?

Also, disclaimer, I don't golf, I am just using that as an example.

I think being liquored up is no excuse for saying something that hurtful, even if it's to a woman who in theory accepts, as an intellectual matter, that her man may have sexual desires that don't involve her exclusively, and even if they both have acknowledged that fact by opening up their sex lives. It was a threesome, the whole idea was that they both participate, and I think what he said to her would make even the most secure person feel pretty profoundly rejected.
