Ask him how Free Trade will solve all the problems stemming from racism.

If Daniel Carver had a good paying job, you would never again see him as the center square.

I hate the media

I was on the treadmill this morning and CNN was on the television in front of me, with the sound off and close captioning on.

This picture flashed

And the caption read: "Symbol of peace or anti-war?"

Putting the grammar issues aside, it's a fucking peace sign. By definition it is a symbol of peace. It may also be anti-war, but questioning whether or not it's a symbol of peace is ridiculous.

Stupid ass media. They should be forced to watch A Charlie Brown's Christmas tonight and write a 200 page essay on the Peace on Earth and Good Will Towards Man part.

For once, I don't think it's the media. The dispute is apparently that some woman put it up on her house and others in her neighborhood/association, many of whom have kids in Iraq, chose to take it as an anti-war comment. She pointed out that no, it wasn't, and that "peace" is a much larger concept than anti-war.

I know what the dispute is. But it's a peace sign. Definitionally, it is a symbol of peace.

I've gotta send these out to the Iraq and Afghanistan vets in my family. They'd display them proudly. Regardless of which message is perceived.

Okay-doke. I was only saying that it seemed that the media was reporting on what the dispute among these people is, not questioning itself, beyond the usual "can we stir up some stuff" headlining. That's all.

eta In any event, the association's backed down from its threats to fine her.

How about the media single-handedly sinking the housing market this year? It was a dead news Summer (not even any good terrorist shit going on), so as the media always does in a dead cycle, it searched for a scary Summer news bit (remember the "shark scare" the media cooked up in 2001?).

Housing prices are actually going to stay steady, and save a few markets that were severely corrected (Phoenix, San Diego, DC), there has been no "crash." The media never cited the fact that the steep corrections were limited to certain unique markets and led the fools in the marketplace to buy into the notion that as Phoenix went, so went the rest of the country. Now, rates are likely to stay flat at least through the first quarter of '07, and if retail takes a drubbing and the market sags, which looks possible, the housing market will stay strong.

A whole lot of hysteria over nothing. It's almost like the media wants to create calamities because they were spoiled by (9/11, Iraq and Afghanistan. God help us when they don't have Bush around. Could you imagine the boogiemen they'd invent with a boring President in office?

In fairness, it could be argued that the media's interference did effect a necessary cool down in the housing market, avoiding a later crash. But stumbling into a positive end trying to hurt people for your own gain doesn't get you any points.

Based only on the little tiny picture of a portion of a single house, I am shocked there is a homeowner's assn for a neighborhood of such ugly, crappy-looking houses. Unless the displayor put the wreath on, like, the crappy back side of the house.

ETA, it may be a picture of some totally and completely different peace sign wreath/satanic symbol (nonononononononoooooooooo, read the story RT links to in her post that burger links to for why I am calling it a satanic symbol, 'kay?) from some other place in Colorado. Fucking lazy-ass AP.

Right. But the media assumes that it must be as stupid as the people that they're reporting on in covering disputes like this. It ends up making everyone (but most especially the media) look like idiots.

It was the side facing the interstate. You get more eyeballs that way.

I am shocked that homeowners' ass'ns target wreaths, picket fences, the color of paint, cars parked at anything but right angles, yet do nothing about ugly, crappy looking houses in the first place.
