Oh, God, yes. We're talking about a totally outrageous paradigm.

 MEYER
Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

 | That would be a No.

And in an attempt to move the Coltrane/rp banter over here, I note that both me and my Fuck Partner are fairly tight with the compliments and I think that we both wish the other was a little less so. It is nice, however, to know that when he tells me I look good he really means it. Some of this stuff goes back to the way you were raised. And it is hard to learn to be the other way if you were raised to be stingy with compliments. But not entirely unworth the effort. |

 | I can insult a person's wit, intelligence or athletic ability. Insulting a person for being ugly is just plain mean.

 | Well, of course not, because wouldn't that make your previous rant hypocritical? Unless you're really perfect of course.

 | I totally agree. I come from a stingy with the compliments family ... and look how that turned out. So I have taught myself to be generous with genuine praise in my intimate relationships and it reaps benefits. I never say things I don't mean, unless I'm kidding around, so rarity wouldn't add real value. |

 | Yep, you know he means it right? Exactly. It is said honestly, without any other motive. He's not saying it b/c he fucked up, or b/c he wants the dishes done, or b/c he's playing poker instead of going the to the couples' shower.

 | Shit, I grew up with a grandmother who actually told one of my cousins she needed to go on a diet or she'd never get a boyfriend - when the kid was 13 or 14. Thats the Irish for you - no filter at all.

 | I was raised in a compliment-stingy household (although my dad is good with the compliments), so I tend to go the opposite way and sometimes shower people with compliments (and maybe sometimes they are unwelcome). WTF though, if someone looks good, why shouldn't I tell them?

eta that I don't give meaningless compliments - did not mean to imply that. I think we had this discussion before about telling people we love them. I tell people that I love that I love them frequently. I'm with rp that rarity doesn't add any value. I just don't understand how it would.

 | For the umpteenth time, that's not what we're talking about now, although that's how the discussion started on the PB. |

 | What I find odd is that one can control ones weight. One cannot necessarily control or create wit, intelligence, athletic ability, or inherent beauty. I think it is ridiculous to rip on someone for something that they are either born with or not. It's like ripping on someone because their dad is a garbage man. What does this have to do with them? |
