ETA I have not seen pies at my Trader Joe's. And I like the option of buying by the slice, which I think would be possible at Marie Callendar's. Or however that is spelled. But not at a grocery-type store.
The Bakers Square (fka Poppin' Fresh Pie) in Bilmore's 'burb has a drive-thru window. I used to live there and the ability to get a slice of pie without getting out of the car was dangerous.

Maybe one near Fringey also has a drive-thru in case of Pie Emergencies.

I can get a McDonald's apple pie w/out getting out of the car, but unless I go from work it's kinda a hike. And driving is a pain in the patootie.

I really need pie delivery. Maybe I can become a pie whore -- require slices of pie.

Open Question

To Whom It Applies;

Did 40 bother you? I am already sick of people asking me whether it feels different, or how I feel about it. I answer - truthfully - that I really don't notice or care because I am mentally arrested at 23 or 25 (and emotionally probably younger), and have a mental physical self-image that is also somewhat outdated, often to my surprise when I see pictures of myself.

But that's the fact. I don't feel that much more decrepit, mature, or wizened. And I expect I will feel the same in another ten years. Is it me? I know that I am unusual (read "freak") in many ways, but still I wonder whether I am that unusual.

And here's my newest example - I was watching the Daily Show "Global Edition" on CNN at a B&B in Ireland where I had a sink in my room, but the toilet in the hall, and Stewart randomly says "Sometimes You Just Have To Pee In The Sink." I was in the common room and could barely prevent myself from not losing it. Because it is so fucking true - and its not just me, its most men, but it doesn't get discussed - so each of us thinks we are the creep, the weirdo, the outlier, when it is actually that we are all stuck with our inner 19-year old who occasionally rises out of the hindbrain and says "Dude, that sink is just the right height, pee, and then run the water and no one in this sound-leaky building will know you did anything other than brush your teeth."

And we get an inner, secret, satisfying thrill from that. I just got away with peeing in the sink. I may be 40 in years, god-knows-what in body, but I am, and will always be, an adolescent in many ways.

"40" is the equivalent of seeing one of those signs on a downhill highway run that says "Trucks, test your brakes." "45" is the equivalent of realizing that you have no brakes and you are going to have to smash into those yellow barrels filled with sand.

When you reach 75 you can get away with taking a shit w/o leaving the common room.

Don't worry, Hank. By that time (what's that? 7 or 8 years from now?) Sweet Spot Labs will have invented something or other to take care of that not-so-fresh feeling in your special area.

thanks D. you know this aging thing is a sore spot for me because my oldest kid turns 50 next Tuesday. I bet that's when I'll first feel old.

2. I remember it like it was yesterday, that sad day when I bit into an apple pie expecting crunchy deep fried tongue-burning gooeyness and all I got was mushy baked second-rate flavorless blahness. Ptuh. I spat it out and never looked back.

3.

Plus, bring back the pudding pie. Also, when McNuggets first came out in 1981, they came out with 2 ultra hot sauces that were amazing. Bring those back too.

When did this happen? I think the last time I had one was 2004ish. Maybe 2003ish. On the way back to work from the doctor.

ETA Google indicates I'm an unobservant fool, and it happened like 15 years ago. Oh well. Apparently I'd rather have baked than nothing (or I'd rather have baked apple pie than a lunch item when I get out of the dr. at 11:00, and haven't eaten since midnight the night before).

Baseball rainouts

rule question:

yesterday the Tigers are at home. they get the Mariners out in the top of the 8th inning. The Tigers are down 4-1. In the bottom of the 8th it starts raining, and the Tigers are rallying. 2 outs, and they tie the game. Then the rain gets too bad to keep playing. there is a 3 hour delay. They do finally finish the game and we blow it anyway.

but here's my question, what is the rule for an incomplete inning if the game did not restart. I thought it was that if at least the 5th has passed (for the losing team) it counts as a game, and incomplete innings are just dropped. But here, since the Mariners had their at bats would the incomplete 8th have counted? (assume it was Tigers up 1 not a tie)

The general rule is that the game reverts back to the last full inning played and the game is complete as you say (not sure for statistical purposes whether top of the eighth counts--I believe not).

However, if a team has scored runs to tie or take the lead in that inning, then the game becomes suspended. My recollection is that this exception was put in place when some manager, expecting rain, and his team having given up a bunch of runs, thereby allowing the other team to take the lead, let them continue to score in the hopes that the rain would come while they were still batting and wash out their efforts. it worked. For the last time.
