Anyway, the loudest person in the place is my friend Brian* from Dublin (he has lived here for many years) who had his USA shirt on and was putting us all to shame in the (1) drinking and (2) vocal advocacy of the US team departments. After a while, most of the Italy supporters gravitate to the end of the bar farthest from us.

Then it looks like we've scored with nine men to make it 2-1, and we're all still jumping around when that prick of a ref comes on the screen to chalk it off. Brian screams at the "Italy" end of the bar: "YOU BOUGHT THE REF YOU CHEATING PRICKS" and the place goes a bit quiet.

But it was true, and they were all pussies anyway. Fuck Italy. The ref knew he had to kiss up to the Italians to get a Champions League assignment from UEFA and his performance was beyond incompetent. Watch now - we'll scrape a win against Ghana and Italy, cheating, diving bastards that they are, will knock the ball around with the Czechs because they know all they need is a draw to send them through. Fuckers.

*His real name.
I have no doubt those sneakin' Czech and Italian bastards would happily turn the game into an international friendly 1-1 draw if theywould. But here's the thing. The Czechs cannot afford to have a tea party with Italy, because what if Ghana beats the U.S.? They need the win. And Italy cannot screw around too much because if the slip up and lose, and Ghana wins, they are out. Ironically, pobably the worst thing would be if the U.S. is up 2-0 at the half and Italy and the Czechs are tied. Then they probably go into a conservative formation and hope the U.S. does not score two more. Which is less of a risk, but still. Wouldn't you feel stupid if you are the Czechs and you sit on a tie and the U.S. scores that fourth goal in stoppage time. I think both teams are going to have to go for the win.

Is it painful to the donor and the donee? Or just the donee?

Hank, you need to call them back.

the web page says I might be sore in the lower back for a few days- doesn't sound like any big deal. I bet I'll have to not drink for a few days.

Beautiful 40-yard shot by Joe Cole to put England up 1-0 in the 34th minute. I am not watcing this on tv. World Cup news just comes to me since my decapitation.

I am sure they would be willing to provide you with whatever pharmaceuticals you find sufficient to offset not drinking. And, once it's done, Shifter will buy you a bottle of your favorite scotch.

We will never score four goals against anyone, not even in the wildest dreams of a decapitated head, just before it loses consciousness forever, staring at its own body through forest of legs created by distraught onlookers and thinking "what if"? We have scored exactly none so far, and Brian McBride, the apex of our oh-so-aggressive 4-5-1 formation, has been woeful.

If Ghana is losing, the Czechs and the Italians will reach an understanding about a draw (a scoring draw if necessary), just like Denmark and Sweden did in Euro 2004 to eliminate Italy and ensure that they both progressed in that tournament.

If Hank actually goes through the process of donating marrow, whether or not it is actually used by a patient and regardless of any patient's outcome, I will buy Hank a bottle of his favorite scotch, or a bottle of good Scotch, if he has poor taste in Scotch.

Jesus H. Christ -- mutual cooperation by way of the flop to get both teams into the next round? Jack Kemp was right.

Shifter will do what it takes. He's that kind of guy.

But hell, if it'll get Old Hank to give the pound of marrow, I'll fund a bottle. As long as he drinks it with anyone Not Me.

I think you should spend some time with the potential donee first. I mean, they may not want to fill up on your marrow afterwards.
