When I used to work at a Greek restaurant (no, I don't have any Greek in me and don't want any, but thanks for asking), I drank way too much ouzo. Along with tequila, it is one of the drinks that I can't even smell without feeling like retching. This is a pointless story, but I was having fun going down memory lane so I thought I would take you all along.

I worked for Greeks in high school.
I miss Gyros.
The halal carts are not the same.
Tsiki [sp] sauce is different.

Excellent -- I had forgotten about that song.
I used to work with a guy named Kelly. Oh, the fun we had with a song from Cheers.

The first time I drank Sambuca was when I was 19. I embarrassed my parents (who are hard to embarrass) when I came home blasted at 3 in the afternoon. They had guests. Apparently, I was extremely rude to them. The day began in the morning with four friends, my boat and a pony keg.

I'm sure you could find one you'd want in you.

one of the secretaries in a firm a few firms back bought her boss the Sambuca set with a glass and coffee beans.
I do not recall the significance of the coffee beans but there is some.
aha
Sambuca is often used rather than sugar to sweeten espresso coffee. A traditional Italian preparation is sambuca con mosca (literally, "with flies"); sambuca served with three coffee beans representing-health, wealth, and happiness (or luck), dropped into the drink.[2]

A thing that sucks about baseball generally is that your team can do well during the whole regular season, and then the playoffs come and it's over for half the teams just like that. Maybe it seems so brutal because the regular season is so long.
|
I agree. And there's no way the first series should be determined in five games. That's just silly. I wonder how different the outcomes would be, since they instituted the wild card, had the first series been 7 games.

That's true about any sport with a long regular season the meaning of which is diluted by extended playoffs. That is why the wild-card sucks, even though it allowed the sox to win the WS.
There is almost no reward for continued success through the season, especially with a 5-game series where you face only a team's three top starters.
the problem is worse in baseball, since even the best teams win only 60% of their games (compare to hockey and basketball, where the percentages are higher).

I had Sambuca in a snifter with an espresso bean after dinner when I was eating at a friend's house when I was in high school. I was a klassy high school drinker. Mainly her mom taught me that Sambuca is really gross.* Good way to discourage high school drinking.
*Maybe I should try it again now that I have discovered that Ouzo can be less than disgusting?

Obviously it's an imperfect basis for calculating this, but I turned up this nugget:
- When the World Series has been tied at 2-2, the Game 5 winner has captured 25 of 38 titles.

Perfectly stated, thank you.
(PS - what's with the cop's gratuitous explanation that one of the captors kept giving her mouth-to-mouth "even though she actually threw up." Like he's some hero. Throw up during artificial respiration is standard.)
I've gotten threatened with "you want me to call security M'am" for muttering (while not even looking at the gate nazis) the words "This is such bullshit" referring to the agents changing the gate without going to tell other people waiting at the old gate. You could see how badly she wanted to do it and was just hoping I'd do something else (I didn't).
As for cops in general, seems to me the only way to curb their abuse is to keep their asses video-ed at all times. Astonishingly, you'll still get people who will justify abuse with absurd explanations (Rodney King verdict - WTF). But it's a start. Some towns have cameras in all low income neighborhoods for just this reason. I love that footage shows up on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/Copwatchers

I was wondering how the Sambuca fit into the whole "Coltrane's Drunken Day" thing too.
