That show would be No. 1 in Neilsen with a bullet, and we all know it.
Why do you think people rubberneck at accident scenes? Some psychiatrist recently published an essay about this, where he said people get many somewhat pleasurable, or somewhat titilating emotions from sad or horrific events. I wish I could find the piece. Basically, he was saying there's a certain strangely satisfying "Thank God that ain't me" reaction people get from seeing bad things happen to others. I think that's the emotion that drives such horrorshow reality programs - a "God, my life really isn't that bad" kick.

Undoubtedly. But there are also people who will do something for fame and money that they wouldn't otherwise.
I guess I just don't understand the horror that you profess about the things people will do on the TV shows you love to watch.

I think the gays and the poor blacks who dominate my neighborhood might beg to differ. Also there really arent any asians or 'hispanics in my hood and I would not agree we have many students for DC. Microbrew is very midnineties which means it should be hitting its peak in DC any minute now. I havent purchased anything at Banana Republic since I had a microbrew. I do love Vanity Fair though I dont subscribe and running (jogging, please). I dallied with Freidns in syndication, again in the mid nto late nineties. :And what is High Asian? Stoned chinese folks?

29 American Dreams
American Dreams is a living example of how ethnically diverse the nation has become: more than half the residents are Hispanic, Asian or African-American. In these multilingual neighborhoods -one in ten speaks a language other than English- middle-aged immigrants and their children live in middle-class comfort.

The site was wrong about the radio (all-news is booorrrrrinnngggg). Close enough on the car.
But they left out "debt." Lots and lots of debt.

Where my family lives. Frighteningly right on except for the reading of Southern Living. Good ole Dad would have a chuckle at that one. That said, they do read shit like DownEast, Vermont Living and anything local. They love cross country skiing, did just buy a computer that works, listen to James Taylor's Greatest Hits, Miles Davis and Diana Krall and wowuld not be caught dead in any cadillac. How Long ISland!

These upscale, empty-nesting couples enjoy the trappings of success, belonging to country clubs, maintaining large investment portfolios and spending freely on computer technology.

Apparently -- depressingly -- I'm an Executive Suite. (Cue the soundtrack for Sebby's rant on suburban hell).

Oh stop.
Although I didn't see it, those kids would have had the surgery whether MTV was there or not. I don't think MTV paid for their surgery, as they tend to do documentaries on an array of subjects to show the whole side of any one issue (or attempt to). I don't know if this show was like its other show, "True Life," but that's what I've seen.
And usually it's the things that are the most appalling that keep your attention the longest. You want to know more about why people are so crazy that you just keep watching. Just look at yourself. I bet you read all of paigow's posts.

Good point.
I really wasn't trying to moralize, just to understand why people watch this shit when they themselves think it's so sick. Honestly, 30 minutes spent watching kids get plastic surgery, and thinking "how could their parents do this," seems like 30 minutes better spent sleeping, fucking, jerking off, playing video games, or counting hairs on your cat. Not necessarily in that order.
(Notice I refrained from saying "read a book or something. Learn yourself. Learn your culture.")
