How Would Jesus Watch on TV?

I spend more time with my TV than I do with anyone except my fiance and my secretary. Please do not insult the current state of TV, especially reality programming. I don't know you outside of your TV-hating posts, but that one was a doozy.
Then you will love a TV that you can walk through. The new Walk-thru Fog Screen.

Sounds like a writer has already taken your concept (maybe he was cruising the boards yesterday?).

Otherwise known as the great british tradition of "taking the piss." I don't think this has anything to do with gender. Men are just as likely (probably more so) to do it.

You are correct, Americans very much do not get this fine british sporting tradtion, and tend to be insulted/shocked that someone would be so openly personally critical and use it for humorous effect. After some years I have actually gotten to where I can take it, though I still lack the skill (or experience, perhaps) to dish it out. But, yeah, generally this doesn't fly in America. We're too busy being sensitive to each others feelings. Fuckin' whimps.

Friendly, supportive, kind etc. I don't see cattiness among my friends and although the occasional bitchy remark might come out, it's not as if it's undeserved in the circumstances and it really doesn't happen too often. We are not particularly nice people (i.e. not nicer than average) - I just think our behavior is pretty normal and that women are not these chronically catty creatures people here seem to be making them out to be.

Shut up, bitch.

Seriously, such a show would be catty because it would be Hollywood, and purveying stereotypes is essential. Just like the ads for "queer eye" (another reality show I don't watch) suggest that gay men are all raging flames (and straight men are slobs who can't cook, clean, or dress), to suit the popular stereotype rather than to reflect reality.

Theory of the lingere shower

See, that makes perfect sense to me. The whole reason for a lingere shower is that the virginal (or "virginal") bride actually needs this stuff/advice. First time brides who, um, don't, can get away with it because of the willing suspension of common knowledge, so everyone can enjoy play-acting at her being an unworldly virgin about to be initiated into the amatory arts in an atmosphere of lightly ironic nostalgia. An already married woman can't even play-act at sexual innocence and ignorance, so the whole thing just seems sordid.

But with truly (more or less) innocent brides you can go all out with the kinky stuff, because there is no delicate balance between reality/pretense to maintain.

We're a bunch of sensitive pussies. Always talking about our feelings...it's disgusting. That's why everyone was so offended by Simon Crowell. Whereas in the UK, he wouldn't be considered harsh at all. Here, he's a monster. He didn't seem offensive to me (the one time I watched the show)...

I blame Oprah.

You know it's a good source when they refer to her as "the inevitable Tara Reid".

But that question deserves an answer ... was she banging Christian Slater? Aff-Ho? Both? Neither (just friends)? Working on the same project and bored with nothing to do?

Maybe peoplenews has the answer.

Edited to add that Tara Reid would rank very high on my plastic-covered list of people I'd most like to visit a strip club with.

I don't think it's concern with our own feelings (mostly), it's over concern with the feelings of others. Here, if your friend is being a fucking whiner, most Americans would have to think hard about how (or if) to mention it, and then only do it in a supposedly "constructive" way. Just saying "you're a fucking whiner," much less following that up with relentless taunting, just doesn't enter the equation here.

I think that, because our cultural diversity means everyone takes everything differently, we've gotten used to assuming, though I hate to phrase it this way, that no one has a sense of humor, no criticism is legitimate, and no one will know if you are kidding about much of anything. 'Cause we're all supposed to live in harmony here, right? So we all limp around trying not to give offense.

Well, I think that fucking sucks. Offending people is fun. Offending people is funny. (NB: Causing people to feel physically threatened or in danger is not funny.) Everyone should have to deal with the fact that most people will not like you because of, or even in spite of, your faults. Your faults aren't what make you loveable or give you character, they are faults. People not calling you fat, or ugly, or stupid, or impotent, or cheap, or an asshole, to your face doesn't mean they don't know it, don't think it, or think its OK. So what's the point.
