This is probably late, but I saw The Devil Wears Prada over the weekend, and was prepared to be underwhelmed. I was happily disappointed - and actually liked it. Meryl Streep was really great (I love her) and even the girl (and I hate when H'wood force-feeds us yet another ingenue) I found to be charming and likeable. Even a few laugh-out-loud moments.

Meryl Streep totally stole the show, though. Her dragon-lady portrayal of the Anna Wintour character was believable and utterly entertaining. I can't imagine anyone playing that role better. A perfect combination of ruthlessness, evil, charm, humor and even managed to provoke a little sympathy (in me, anyway).
I was talked into seeing this a couple weeks ago with a female friend. Two showings were sold out on a weeknight at the multiplex. That explains why it's grossed nearly $85 million. With no special effects and no costly stars, the studio has got to be thrilled.

I don't think Hollywood is force-feeding Anne Hathaway on anyone. I did find it interesting that she looked worse when she had the "stylish" makeup on. I think it emphasizes aspects of her face that should be downplayed. She's no Maggie Gyllenhall, but she did sleep with Maggie's brother in Brokeback Mountain. I read somewhere that she's well known among business travellers as her Disney films always enjoy a long life on airplanes.

I've not been listening to new music recenrtly. I haven't yet bought The Racounteurs (Jack White's side project), but Ian Love and Jose Gonzalez are worth a listen.

Think outside of the box Hank, if you are capable of such a feat. My majesty and the presentation of the same transcends the race, as does the love for me. Open your mind and your heart.

Given your failure to say otherwise, I assume that you actually liked it.

Fruit.

What next? Instead of poker, we get together for a movie night with Sleepless in Seattle as the main event?

Anyhoo, I can categorically state for the record that ppnyc is not a Penske sock. (Nor a Not Bob sock, for that matter, not that I have any.)

Actual Fashion Post

I have a few weddings coming up, of varying formality, so it was time to head out a purchase some new dresses yesterday. Before hitting some of the trendy local boutiques, I thought I would check out BCBG just to see what new stuff they had in. Walking up to BCBG, I saw a Betsey Johnson store that I didn't know was there (Melrose - no longer for the goth crowd buying intentionally torn fishnets). Freaking A. Good good stuff in Betsey Johnson these days. I hadn't really been into one of her shops in a while (since the days of all pink and black, florals and lacey things). Almost every dress I tried on was good. Bought two dresses and some cute "vintage" gold heels. Would have bought more if I could have justified it...

So if you haven't been by her shops for a while and you are in the market for dresses, I heartily recommend it.

It wasn't awful. It was total girl-porn, but not girl-porn of the lesbionic variety. You have to rent Havoc if you want to see A.H. nekkid, but she's in lingerie a couple of times. In fact, over the credits, they show different women getting dressed for work. I think this was so that women could placate the boyfriends/husbands they dragged to the movies: "See, we've only been here three minutes and already there's been plenty of tight shots of cleavage. It's not so bad."

When I played poker last week with the guys, there wasn't any mention of Tom Hanks movies.

Having a daughter who was just the right age for the Princess Diaries movies, I've seen Anne Hathaway in moveis for years now. She also made a flick called "Havoc" with thekid from Third Rock that had about a three-day run in the theaters but regularly shows up on cable. If you're one of those guys who saw Brokeback Mountain just to see her topless (I'm not), then you definitely want to check out Havoc. But I digress.

Anne Hathaway is one of those people who look best with a very minimalist approach to makeup. She can be very gawky or quite striking, depending on the angle and the way she's lit or made up.

I don't really think she's one of the Hollywood ingenues. She's paid her dues making kiddie flicks for a long time and now she's all growed up and she's one of the few young actresses willing to take some of the more risky parts. Kirsten Dunst did it with Virgin Suicides and she almost faded out of sight after that for a good long time. Jena Malone has been in Donnie Darko and United States of Leland and she's now trapped in the Indie ghetto.

She's got some talent and I don't think anyone should write her off just yet.

Kudos Not Bob. Patentpara rocks (and is real-I think she may be in my building, as a matter of speculation), and her detractors are obviously insecure little dweebs.

The kid from Third Rock From the Sun (Joseph Gordon-Leavit) was in an indie film this summer called "Brick" which was really good. Add it to your Netflix when it comes out on DVD. It's a film noir story set in an LA-area high school.

I predict a Taxwonk/fringey fight coming up.

I have a well-fed addiction to Betsey Johnson. The salesgirls know me by name in two locations and greet me when I come in. It does not make me feel good, but anyway. Over the past weekend, I bought yet another dress there - a cute green 40's-style dress. They fit perfectly and are good quality and fun. And the shoes and jewellry also rock.

She's 24 years old. She was 23 when she made havoc and 19 when she made the first "Princess Diaries." I think you may be off.

I don't know why people give him so much crap- he really strives to be helpful.
I do. I really do. In that vein, I also love the Black Angels. I have missed their first two shows in Minneapolis, and I am deeply regretful. I think they would be great live. But, be advised that my and Sebastian's appreciation of this band may have something to do with another shared hobby. (Wink wink!!!! LOL!!!) Think a drone rock cross between the VU and the Doors.
