Since I know this was directed toward my post, I'll say this in my defense.

Bullshit. Spoiler spaces are stupid. The reason they are stupid is that you are just adding length to a page. A better solution is to do something like PC suggested, although some of us (read: me) would freely admit their web wizardry is not up to the level where this is a feasible solution. On the decidedly low tech side, maybe we should just suggest in the re: line that the subject contains spoliers so that the person who doesn't want their viewing experience ruined can feel free to scroll right by.

Furthermore, if you could really tell what happened from the content of my post, then you have just outed yourself as this guy.

Or just put spoiler in the first line. Are people incapable of stopping their reading brain at that word?

Last Minute Trips

My mom is having a milestone birthday next week, and my family decided to throw her a birthday party. One of my sisters went crazy and I think that there have been wedding receptions with less planning involved. Come to think of it, my parents' wedding reception had less planning involved. (It was in a methadone clinic, they served fried chicken and cold duck, and no one knew that they’d be going to a wedding reception that day.)

Anyhow, because the party is on a weekday, my youngest sister didn't think she could make it from San Francisco, but as the party planning got more and more elaborate (last I heard, the windows in the house are going to be covered in red gauze to create some sort of opium den atmosphere and there's been talk of Cajun martinis), she realized it would suck if she couldn't make it.

So my sister is on the phone and on the internet right now making last minute travel arrangements to fly here from San Francisco either tonight or sometime tomorrow and she'll leave Wednesday morning. I didn't know she was coming until about ten minutes ago, and the information has totally made my day.

So my poll question is this: Have you ever traveled at the last minute or as a surprise for someone? Has anyone traveled at the last minute or as a surprise for you? Was the trip worth the secrecy/expense of last minute travel?

To answer my own poll, the day I got the Displaced Dog, he and I flew to Houston from where we’d been going to college without telling any but my mom that we were coming. I was a surprise, but the Displaced Dog got the bigger reception. No one knew that I was even thinking about getting him, and there is nothing cuter in the whole world than a ten week old puli puppy. It was totally worth it.

I take it that you place the vast "middle ground" of people who are neither ugly nor especially attractive in the ugly camp. I would not.

So we two reasonable people (giving you the benefit of the doubt here) disagree (can you believe it?!? What are the chances?). No big whoop.
You can whoop it up all you like. But I guess the problem lies in your inability to properly classify.

I would say you shouldn't use "good looking" and "ugly" because I won't put someone in the good looking category if they aren't (hold your breath) good looking. I think you think that way of ugly people. But it's no surprise that you're nicer than I (hmmm. That sounds right, but I still want to say "nicer than me"). You need a third category.

It's gotta be "attractive" vs. "unattractive" or maybe "not attractive." I don't think we're really arguing here, but either you're attractive or you aren't. And if you look at it that way, I doubt your numbers would be the same.

Miami and LA I'll give you, at least as reasonable. But Big D? Cite, please. Or something, because when I think Dallas, I think big hair, big jewelry, and tons 'o makeup. I'll grant you, southern women, and texans, do more with what they've got than anywhere. But that doesn't make them hot. Except perhaps to dtb.
Austin, in front of the University of Texas tower, April, Tues. - Thurs., 10 am - 3 pm. Just have a seat and watch them go by.

Or sit somewhere on the Champs Elysees all night, preferably until 4 AM...it's like you're sitting next to a runway...

For my mother's 50th, I flew in from Texas and flew my brother in from New York to surprise her.

I got in on the Friday night. My father picked me up at the airport, so we walked in around the time he would have usually arrived home from work. I walked in and she glanced up and said "hi, Eve." (She swears she just knew I was coming.)

The next day, I picked up my brother and brought him home. She nearly fainted.

It was incredibly expensive, but totally worth it.

I also surprised her at the last minute on her wedding anniversary when I came back from law school.

Bonds

Is the lack of outrage over his personal trainer being involved in this steriod scandal a result of public indifference? Or is it that the general public has been assuming steroid use for years so this isn't coming as a big shock?

It's the latter for me. I mean, look at the guy compared to a decade ago...

I am awaiting with glee Sammy Sosa's press conference where he admits he used steroids but says he only used them for batting practice.

Once flew to Caracas on a whim with a boy I was dating. He lived in San Diego and I lived in Atlanta. It was a very hot, very sext thing to do. The entire flight there, I was on pins and needles waiting for my four day fling. While there, we sun bathed, drank too much, danced late into the night, ate really well, and had sex anywhere the mood struck us. It was TOTALLY worth it. (Did I mention that my passport had expired? And that I paid like an extra $400 to get it expedited for renewal in 24 hours?)

Flew at the last minute to be with a friend after a bone marrow transplant. Again, totally worth the expense. We sat in her hospital room, being totally morbid. I told her on more than one ocaission that I would "kick her cancer ridden ass". She told me that the primary reason she wanted to get well was to smack me silly. I told her she'd never live long enough. It was macabre and silly. At one point, her father got mad and told us we were not allowed to make any more cancer/death jokes. We lasted maybe 30 minutes. Looking back, I am so grateful for that time. I'd do it all over today, if she were still here.

Yep. Until Bonds takes drug tests proving he's clean--And not one at his convenience, so he can get clean--we'll assume a certain level of guilt. What does the indictment add? We already knew the guy was suspect.

Although I would guess that when Bonds is proven to have been on 'roids, we'll see a level of outrage similar to what we've been seeing for Rose. People knew he bet on baseball, but his admission put it front and center in their face, so they got really pissed and now think he shouldn't be in the hall.

FWIW, assuming Bonds used 'roids, which would explain perhaps half of his homeruns the last few years, I say no hall for him, even if he "breaks" aaron's record.

The guy gained like 30 pounds of muscle after the age of 30. I think it's no big surprise. Now, if they flip his trainer for a direct link to get Bonds, that would be something.

Weird to think that steroid abuse could have possibly made this guy a bigger asshole.

It is definitely true that hot people abound at UT in the afternoon.
