general accent rule (college)
Part of the point of an out-of-state college experience is to make you really self-conscious about your own accent, whatever it may be. Of course if you, like me, have no accent, then there is no problem. But if, for example, you are a person from Rhode Island, Texas or the deep south going to school in upstate NY, or a person from Wisconsin/Minnesota going to school in Boston, or a person from Boston going to school in southern California (etc.), people will mock you. Fact of life. Even if their own accents totally suck wind (how can Boston people mock anyone?). It is through these trials and tribulations that everyone ends up sounding generically the same (like me) by the time they hit the professional world.
You're welcome for this lesson of life.

Someone please give me a good reason not to do any of the following:
1. insert this emoticon - :fuckyou: - into an email to a colleague who is currently "supervising" me
2. sarcastically reply to a micromanaging email with "no, I did not do that, because I am, in fact, a retard, or
3. quit
edited to add: "I wasn't even supposed to be here today," and insert expressive emoticons.

Because all of these options are less effective than a flippant "Bitch please."

Especially if the offender is PJ, who hates the word bitch.
If you have pets, I can give you a good reason not to quit -- you don't want them to starve. Though, I bet homeless people with pets do better than homeless people without pets. HUH, that just reminded me, I had a dream last night that included a homeless person with an orange tabby cat that he carried around in a backpack with the head sticking out. IRL, I don't think that would happen unless the cat were crippled and/or brain damaged.

ABBA love, thank you. I just pictured myself saying that in the conversation that preceded my post and cracked up. I feel so, so, so much better.

This was out of no where. But I agree -- I don't think a homeless person would carry around an orange tabby cat in a backpack unless there were something truly bizarro going on.

Though, she's down and in bed eating chocolate, so I'm a little confused.
God help me, I'm tracking her moods.

There was a fixture in DC who rode around on his motorcycle with a cat riding on the front. The cat wore a helmet. I never actually saw them, but friends had. I think the guy died recently. I have no idea whether the cat was dain bramaged.

No, but Northeasterners* assume that anyone with a southern accent is a racist dummy. So, her story fits (at least for those of us who live in the Podunkvilles and red states of the country).
That being said, I haven't noticed NYC lawyers being any more tool-like than non-NYC lawyers. Granted, I do slip and fall cases, so I haven't had to negotiate a leveraged buy-out hostile takeover corporate raid poison pill rezoning thing, or whatever it is that you transactional lawyers do, but I've dealt with lawyers from places like Rogers & Wells. They didn't seem a whole lot different from the guys and gals in the Podunkville Bar Association.
Well, maybe they were better-dressed (some of them) and had degrees from places like Smith for undergrad and Columbia for LS, instead of Podunk State. And they kayaked less. But they were no more or less tool-like.
* Sweeping generalization, but unfortunately true of many in the NE.
