Perfect. May we all enjoy our Friday happy hours in peace (and absence of Texas school talk).
And to NotFromHere, my new hero, a nice weekend to you.

Bitching, please.
I am sick of the following work-related happenings:
people going out of town without providing status reports on the stuff they're doing and expecting you to cover for them
"covering" closings for other people (Dude, it's your transaction. Do you really want me coming in at the last minute and beating the other side up about issues you already (wrongly) caved on?
secretaries who don't even try to do a good job, no matter how much I kiss their asses, praise them when they do good work, etc.
clients who don't understand that it's not my fault that Bear Sterns can't run their computers by candlelight and that we JUST CAN'T CLOSE today
the other parts of my firm which can't get their shit together but which the partnership or others in charge just let slide because "that's just how [insert shitty department here] is"
and, last, but not least, whoever stole my free Starbucks coupon off my desk. FUCK YOU! I WILL GET YOU!

Funny you should mention grandparental matriculation. There's a news story today about a liberal arts college in Maryland that offers financial aid enabling new students to pay the same tuition as their alumnus parent or grandparent. You coulda been an Aggie for, what, $2.50?
As for me, there's no way I would have survived my grandmother's college. It's a notorious party school, and she necessarily had a much higher alcohol tolerance, having been born on the Old Sod. I'm very glad she went, because as a result we evolved from Shanty to Lace Curtain in one generation. Sláinte, Grandma!

First of all, I would never have household workers. I would never, in such a way, demean my fellow man (or woman) by making him (or her) clean my home. But, if I did have any household workers, not only would I pay their social security taxes, but I would make sure they were legal. And if they were illegal, I would work with the system to help them, because certainly, if I were to hire such people, they would be coming from terrible circumstances and need the help of our great, american society, but legally.

So what's the call on that anyway? If you know someone who has a nanny that they're paying "cash under the table" then what is your obligation to the govt? Other taxpayers?
|
Do attorneys have any obligation under SOX to report such "cash under the table" payments?
I too would be uncomfortable having someone clean my house, but I also know of at least one former assistant from a previous who is now cleaning houses part-time as a way to make ends meet. She's a single Mom and the firm reduced her hours to part time. If she is willing to provide a service, and I need that service, what is so demeaning about it? It's not like she has a pimp who's forcing her to scrub the toilet bowl.
Anne
Just back from DC. Are they ever going to finish all the construction projects down there? Every time I go there are more fences and memorials, and condo projects being built.

If it will make you feel any better, you can have my Starbucks 'credit card' that a vendor sent me. I don't drink coffee (or mocha chai latte's anyways so it just sets in my wallet).

Huh. I would have gone with "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish" or "William, It Was Really Nothing" or "Hand in Glove" or "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" or "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me," but I won't tell you how to do your job.

Wonky, I don't mean to pick on you alone and you are far from the worst offender, but you had the bad luck to over-quote when I was feeling cranky about it.

That depends. Is the house a registrant? Time for a little perspective here, kids. This SOX shit has the lawyers sounding like a bunch of Final Four accountants hawking the same lame tax shelter.

Are you all crazy? Do you really want to work GA hours and then spend your free time cleaning? There is nothing like coming home to a clean house.
The only thing to feel uncomfortable about is finding someone you can trust with a key to your house. I found my cleaning lady by calling a nearby wingnut church and had her come on Saturdays a couple times until I got comfortable with the idea. She has kids in pre-school and kindergarten and cleaning houses gives her more flexibility and money than she'd earn at a lot of part-time jobs. I don't know what I'll do when her kids are both in full-day school and she goes back to her real career of speech therapy.

Screw you. GA hours aren't that bad. Show me some associate complaining about GA hours and I'll show you an associate who doesn't know how to pad a bill.
