Did Laird Hamilton get the Jay Adams treatment? Although, really, it wasn't Peralta's fault that Adams was in prison when he made Dog Town and Z-Boys. And surely the movie got Adams some endorsement deals - hell, I own 2 sets of Jay Adams Grind Kings.

Anyhow, he's 27 years old, played for the NFL for five years, had a few endorsements, and I'm assume he's made at least $20M or so in the five years he's been with the NFL. His contract this year, with incentives, was around $6M. Also, he's been busted by the NFL a few times for smoking pot, which is a violation of their substance policy.

His agent looks like he's trying to do some damage control, and Mike Ditka was lamenting the "thrown away career." I'm sure all the sports analysts will be deconstructing this whole thing for the rest of the week.

I'm thinking "good for Ricky." If I made what I thought was enough money to keep me comfortable for the rest of my life, and I wasn't really happy with being in the spotlight, why the hell would I stick around? How many opportunities do you have to trek around the world while you're still young?

Cris Carter is saying that the fans are the big losers here, but I'm not seeing the fan disappointment as a good incentive to stick around doing something you don't want to do.

Thoughts?
I'm with you in saying "good for Ricky". I saw a quote this morning that went something along the lines of "I was never strong enough to live without football. Now I'm strong enough."

He'll either flourish or end up dead on a yacht like Bison Dele. Either way, it will sure be interesting.

Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

A lot of Jay's friends felt that the movie portrayed his adult life in an unfairly negative light. I mean, the guy mainly lived in Hawaii and surfed - that doesn't sound too bad to me. Like Ricky Williams, Jay just didn't want to deal with the pressure of being a professional athlete. Just because Jay happened to be incarcerated at the time Peralta was shooting gave some of the Adams segments a maulin "Where Are They Now" feel. Jay's friends felt like Peralta did this on purpose and was selling out to keep the documentary's corporate sponsors (it was financed by Vans) happy. There may be something to this - notice that all of the "fuck"s are deleted? Peralta and Adam have now publicly reconciled.

I don't like the proximity of "how does your mother masturbate" to "hey little dick." Was this today? Because today ain't over yet.

It's kind of like you're speaking a foreign language, but let me see if I've got this right:

The fans of this Jay fellow think that Peralta "sold out" by including segments on the seedy underbelly of the surfing world in order to appease the sponsors? Because Vans is supposed to be jumping up and down with excitement that Jay (who I assume is a preeminent surfer when not in custody of the state) is serving as a [bad] example to future surfers of America? Yo, people in jail can't buy checkered print canvas loafers.

I'm not doubting your reporting, but sometimes one has to question the rationality of the conspiracy theorists. I mean, damn.

Good, I'm glad someone else couldn't follow the logic. I'm not alone, for once. FWIW, everyone in RIding Giants was portrayed in a positive light.

The worst of it was, they indeed caught me on an LDD. Spooky. Maybe when the mercury hits 70º later today I'll feel more confident.

I think the theory was more that Vans wanted to present a "say no to drugs" theme to appeal to parents who were buying the dvd for their kids. Jay looked pretty rough in the movie, especially in contrast to the picures of him when he was young. Peralta didn't need to hit the "what happened to you?" points so hard.

eta: you don't need to add much "say no to drugs" message to this.

He's entitled to do what he wants, but:

1) It's kind of a dick move to just phone in your retirement to the team. Have some balls. At least tell the head coach, gm & owner in person. They invested a lot in him and went out of their way to acquire him;

and 2.) It's really a dick move to announce it a week before the team goes to camp. If you're gonna retire out of the blue like this, announce it after the season so the team can go get somebody to replace you via the draft/free agency/trade etc. Now the Dolphins (who I normally have no sympathy for) are left with a #1 running back who's never started an NFL game and the rest of the league knows they will be desperate to make a deal. His former teammates also have to be pissed.

Just saying if the money runs out and he wants to ever come back, he's burned a lot of bridges to go with his giant bag of weed.

Yeah, had the Dolphins known earlier, they probably would have made a run at Eddie George.

He probably has $8-10 million in the bank. That can last you a LONG time in Asia.

I agree wholeheartedly with that. His taking off for parts unknown after dropping that bomb also meant that he doesn't have to really face the backlash. Who the fuck cares in Thailand that Ricky Williams left the Dolphins?

I sort of get the impression that he may have made the decision in the last few days. As of a month ago, from the accounts of the team meeting on June 22, he was ready to play, in great shape, and vocal about his desire to do well this season. Apparently he had been talking about retiring once the season was over, and I don't think it would have surprised anyone if he had. But I get the impression that everyone was pretty taken aback by his announcement that he had done it this season. It does suck, though, that his delay caused the Dolphins to miss out on acquiring Eddie George.

I doubt that he has any interest in coming back. He pretty much severed his ties with the NFL, and the sports writers are already crucifying him for it.

I have tickets to a scrimmage with the Dolphins in two weeks. It'll be interesting to see how the team is holding together.
