  • Buddhist monks 'slashed, beat taxi driver'
    From correspondents in Phnom Penh

    July 18, 2006
    This article from : AAP

FOUR gambling Cambodian monks were charged with serious assault after they allegedly slashed and beat a taxi driver who tried to cash in his winning hand and go home, police said.

Police chief of Kien Svay district just outside the capital, Mang Pech, said motorbike taxi driver Meas Buntheng, 29, had been playing cards with the monks last week at their pagoda when he decided to take his winnings and go home.

"The monks did not want him to stop playing and leave, as he had won around 50 cents from each of them, so they lost their tempers," Mr Pech said.

"Three of them beat him with the poles used to beat the pagoda's sacred gong, and another one returned with a cleaver and chopped him 14 times."

He said Mr Buntheng remained in a critical condition in hospital.

The four Buddhist monks had been disrobed and were being held in custody facing assault charges. If convicted they face up to 10 years in jail.

"Both sides got angry with each other, but it was the monks who inflicted the injuries. Monks are not permitted to play cards. Monks cannot behave like this. This is against our tradition," Mr Pech said.
In Cambodia, lay people become monks for some period of their life, i.e., being a monk is a temporary thing. It is most common for young men to enter the monastery for a year or so. Likewise, older people who have raised their children and been widowed will often become monks. I'd wager that these monks were all young guys. Young guys getting into fights related to gambling? Shocking, it never happens here in the more civilized US, right?

Yes, but that would make for some interesting fruit combos. Crunchy blueberry scones! Crispy crunch raspberry scone....It would be nasty in pumpkin but....you win some lose some

Do they offer anything of value? I'm serious. I don't really like their coffee, but I have no other alternative on my way to the office. And I need the caffeine. I demand an alternative. Their food is sub-par and their coffee is just average - are we the only people who have figured this out?

There is a Caribou somewhat nearby, but that's not worth the walk. What do caribou eat?

I have eaten a veggie sangwich there when I was starving to death and actually thought it wasn't half bad. I mean it wasn't a Katz's pastrami but when you have limited other choices . . .

Starbucks is a caffeine delivery system, haven't you figured THAT out? And what chain food place isn't just average?

Their coffee is not great, but it's fine. If I could get Blue Bottle coffee every day I would, but that has to wait until I'm at the Ferry Building on the weekends.

Caribou are owned by the First Islamic Bank of Bahrein, NTTAWWT.

To add to that list of chains,

Capital Grille

Stoli dolis, baby.

AoN, they opened a new Chipolte near me, but I am dieting. sigh.

Also Starbucks is what it is. It is convenient and consistent I've had better espresso and I've had worse. I would prefer other chains, like Peet's but they haven't done so well here. Also, my starbucks I walk in in the morning and they have my drink ready for me on the bar before I've even paid.

Is this true?

If so, those Bahreinians make some damn fine coffee.

I wish there was a Caribou near me. Sometimes I fantasize about moving back to Atlanta, just for the Caribou coffee.

And then I remember that an assjack named David lives in Atlanta, and the feeling goes away.

Flower are you hinting?

Thanks to Mr. Helpful here, I learned about Pandora.com

Remember you plug in a band name and the program keeps playing music, by the selected band and others, that you might like. It functions like a radio station. After each song you can give a "thumb up" or down, and the program tailors future choices based upon that input.

It works better with bands that don't have a really unique sound. I tried "Gang of four" radio and that was useless since they really don't sound like anyone else.

the Jam worked better. right now my "The Jam" plays almost all songs i like, even when displaying something I hadn't heard before. The sameness makes it not something to listen to for too long, but still it's nice for a few hours a day.

the program will do 2 things- play songs it's pretty sure you will like due to your past "thumbs up"- but it also tries to stretch limits by going off a bit, I'll call that "going fishing."

Early on when you're first using it, there are more "fishing trips." Of course they are more likely to result in "thumb down" vote. On the other hand "fishing" is also the most likely way to hear something different you do like, that you might otherwise not ever have heard.

Anyway, now there are fewer fishing trips and the station is really playing things I like- I've heard a ton of 60s stuff I had never heard that I like, and a few new bands that I will buy. The program knows what i like- all good right?

Yesterday a song starts, and my memory is that I liked the intro- maybe I didn't, can't really be sure. But then the lyrics start:

"I like butt-fucking"
"Top or bottom don't matter"
"I just wanna be part of butt-fucking"

I look, it's some power pop fag band. I quickly turned it off w/o voting.

Here's the problem- I'm afraid to turn pandora back on in case it keeps playing songs from that CD knowing I should like them- or maybe it was fishing?

Am i gay?

Caribou offers no advantage. They price to match starbucks (or exceed). And it's no better.

If you're stuck with starbucks, get the small, plain coffee. The price is okay.

Dear NotBob

We went music shopping this weekend and the husband bought Cheyenne Kimball. He likes chick music. The couple of songs I heard sounded OK, but I do not like chick music. Have you heard it?

Caribou are owned by the First Islamic Bank of Bahrein, NTTAWWT.
It used to be owned by Arabica, Ltd., a consortium of members of the Saudi Royal Family. It appears that they did an IPO in 2005 that significantly diluted their ownership, although some quick (and rather slap-dash) research failed to turn up any info on how much they still own, or if there was a transfer to Bahrain at any time.

Ty doesn't need someone checking the factual basis of his assertions. Don't you find Ty generally credible?

Check This Out

On Rockstar...

My early favorites Toby and Magni, are still the strongest competitors.

I still hate Dilana. The Witchie-poo hair does not help the image that she's going to take off on her broom at any time while she's on stage. I don't know why the "band" really loves her, but there it is.

Still hate Zayra. What was with the see through evening gown? They were too nice to her, almost as if someone had said to go easy on her. She still sucks and if she's not gone this week, it'll be next week.

Storm Large? Sorry Ollie, I don't see it. She loves herself way too much and the pouty-I'm-trying-to-be-sexy rocker thing she's trying to pull off is forced.

Josh sounded a lot like Kermit last night. He got better toward the end of the song, but he's no rocker. He's a better musician than the others, but is not a good fit for the band.

Dana - too mellow. She's gone in the next week or 2 as well.

Lukas - I'm not into him. He's a little too theatric and I hate the hair and the makeup. Both together is comical.
The others are all generic mostly.
