This sounds interesting -- what happened?

A few years ago, I left my Amex in a restaurant, and didn't realize that it was missing until the next week, when I went to use it. I called to report it as lost, and Amex told me that they had already pulled the card -- the person who found it had used it the next day at a Sears, a gas station, a TGI Fridays, and was finally stopped while trying to use it at an electronics/cell phone kiosk in the mall.

When I said something like "hmmm, that's interesting -- I'm surprised that you didn't to call me to let me know about this," the guy responded that they ("they" who -- Amex? the coppers? the electronics guy in the mall?) wanted to make sure that I wasn't involved in a scam of some sort.

I was so relieved to have had it all fixed that I didn't get pissed at Amex until about a month later.

Oh, I think Yankee fans should LOVE him. He left Boston for more money to become a Yankee. All of the goodwill he earned in Boston is gone. No one in Boston will care that he was one of the most popular players on the Sox first World Series championsip in 1000 years now that he went to the Evil Empire. They will hate him. This signing disgusts Sox fans. He will get booed in Boston. He never would have had to pay for a drink in New England for the rest of his life (even had he gone to, say, the Angels). But b/c he signed with the Yankees, he'll get berated out of the bar. Because of this, Yankee fans should embrace him and remind Sox fans of how awesome he is (even if he's not). Rub it in their face that you stole one of their beloved players. It'll drive them nuts.

I still have the card - although now it is cancelled and cut up. Somehow someone got my information, including name, address and phone number and credit card. Maybe they got it off a statement, although I shred my statements. Maybe they got it off some place that has my credit card information on file. Or maybe they are high tech and hacked into a site where I placed an online order recently. I don't know. They did not get the physical card, and so it was kind of scary that they managed to get the information, although I am pretty careful with it.

Anyway, I called the credit agencies and put fraud alerts on my cards and went to the police station and filed a report, so I've done pretty much all I can do. For NYPD, they were extremely nice to me, which I was not expecting.

Nice. Contrast that with my experience. I called MBNA to tell them I would be travelling overseas and using my card for a lot of purchases, and that the activity should be considered normal. So, second day I check my messages. Call from MBNA. "We've detected a lot of abnormal activity overseas on your card. Please call us immediately to confirm this use is authorized. We will put a hold on the card in the mean time."

Good work, guys. Why do I bother?
