Heh. Presumably, his Christianist tendencies would lead the US into an open-ended occupation of Darfur.
I sometimes idly wonder if Bilmore's affection for endless neoconservative armed initiatives squares well with his potential backing of the theocons that he otherwise holds in disdain. I miss him . <*sniff*>

Apples and oranges, I guess. The LA form of cluelessness is very "Arrested Development" or "Action" (that was a good show). SF's cluelessness is more "Monty Python." Everytime I've been there I've loved it. The people are wonderful, the town is nice and even the vineyards are kind of fun in a drunk-before-2 sort of way. And there's always one absurdist who actually believes in the craziness some people profess to believe in out there. He'll say really wild nonsensical stuff, which goes great with champagne. I appreciate it... It's like hearing myself at my worst "argue an impossible position" low, but nasally and so, so affected.

When i was last in SF I tried to meet with some of the socks, and none of them were willing to come into the city. They all live somewhere outside i guess. What I find so odd about that, is that for 90% of the country I am "most beoved" and socks line up to meet me. Explain that dichotomy.

Of course, that will test whether the Neanderthals are true small govt advocates or just hypocrites who'll cry for their luxurious benefits like everyone else.

Wait, when did they claim to be small gov't advocates?

Speaking of crackpots in the Bay Area, the SF Chronicle has a story about a memorial for troops killed in Iraq in Lafayette, Cal., over the hills to the east of Berkeley and Oakland. Someone has put crosses on a hillside across the street from the BART station, one for every serviceman killed in Iraq. Yesterday a bunch of volunteers added another ~300 crosses to get the number right.
Apparently the whole thing pisses some people off:
- The sign was vandalized twice -- once by a woman who stopped her car, climbed the hillside and tore it down, and later by someone who threw paint on it. Critics say it denigrates the memory of brave soldiers killed in a time of war, while supporters see it as an homage to those troops and a message to the Bush administration to end the conflict.
"One of those crosses has my son's name on it," said Nadia McCaffrey, 61, of Tracy, the mother of Army Sgt. Patrick McCaffrey, who was killed in Balad on June 22, 2004, by Iraqi troops he was training. "This is something we need to confront."
I really don't get the criticism. I don't see anything in the article suggesting that the display denigrates anything.

The criticism - as written in other places less biased than the Chron - is that the families of several of the fallen do not like their sons'/daughters' names being used in an anti-administration, anti-war display.
I couldn't care less one way or the other, but I can see both sides of that argument.

Driving through the Richmond the other day, I would have guessed we were invaded by China.

I can see both sides, too. But from what little I've bothered to read about this, there aren't any signs or displays that would indicate that the display is anti-war or anti-administration -- even though that apparently is the sentiment of the people who put the display up.

The Chronicle doesn't suggest that there's anything overt anti-administration or anti-war about the display. When I initially read about this a ways back, I thought it was just a hillside of crosses -- no signs, no names -- though I may have been uninformed. And apparently that's when the woman started tearing signs out (and there was no indication that she was related to any of the fallen).
