Did you delete your "out" box?

If it's a fairly overly nice friend, you could create a "Alex de Large captured" sock, or something and have them post your witty replies under that sock.
Not a bad idea. I still need to see what I can do about triangulating...

Also try http://www.anonymizer.com/ if you have a popup blocker on make sure it doesn't interfere.
They have blocked the ip and the name. I basically get a time out error. I'll look at anonymizer...

IT problems: continued

OK, so I found a list of public proxy servers. Am I correct that I simply need to put in one of the addresses into the proxy server setting, and that's it?

I'd like to go this route as I'd like to be able to post (i.e. no anomynizer).

Inquiring minds want to know...

No, it was a gift from Minnesota friends. They seemed nice. I had no idea they secretly wanted to kill me and my family.

They always seem nice. That's what they do. And then they lull you into a sense of complacency by talking about ducks or the Vikes, or by telling you Iowa jokes, and then -- BOOM -- it's all over.

1 down 15 to go.
Ah, good times, good times. I also liked the jello-wrestling events down at the quad after Torts. Now I'm a big nerd, but you were on a trivia team during law school? That's like people who read for pleasure. What's wrong with you people? Can't you simply drink yourselves silly like the rest of us?

I am uncertain whether your out box impacts the number of messages, I will check this later when I have a chance and let you know.

I have been out of the office all day so I apologize for not responding earlier.

Delete the PMs from your out box too. You might just make sure you uncheck the copy option, and it won't put a copy in your out box, and you therefore won't need to worry about it.

I forgot to mention . . . there are other addresses you can use, actually.

Try the following (they are all numerically equivalent to the lawtalkers IP address):

http://3453378234 (this is the dotted-decimal address 205.214.94.186 converted into one long binary number 11001101110101100101111010111010, which, in turn, is converted into a 10-digit decimal number)

http://0xcd.0xd6.0x5e.0xba (this is the IP address where each of the component decimal numbers in the dotted-decimal address is converted into hex: 205 = 0xcd, 214 = 0xd6, etc.)

Depending on the sophistication of your censorware, such addresses may or may not be blocked.

NOTE: These addresses don't work with every web browser, however. They appear to work on Netscape 7.0 and Mozilla 1.3, but not Internet Explorer 6.0 (older versions of IE may work, however).

Regarding public proxies -- they may or may not work depending on how your network is configured. You can try entering in the address/port# of some proxy server you found (in the proxy config menu of your browser) and see whether it works or not. If it doesn't, it might be, for example, that your network admin has configured the firm's firewall/router/gateway to block traffic to/from certain ports.

If you can, befriend the IT folks at your firm to get more info if nothing seems to work. (I befriended several early on and was offered a tour of the firm's telephone closet and its server room, even. At times, I also got a heads up re: layoff info -- since the GPs have to tell the IT people to restrict access).

Flinty: It was more of a group of friends who'd go to the Irish pub to drink and make the Cutters feel like the dumb proles they knew themselves to be deep down.

And by the way, Seabiscuit is one hell of a book.

still just 1 down, 15 to go :-(

Hey, I think I'm one of those Cutters (the short, defensive one), but I know what you mean. I was just playing. And if I knew anything about horseracing, I'd read Seabiscuit, but knowing me, I'll just wait until the movie comes out on HBO or something.....

Tried the alternative IP's, but I am using IE6 on win XP pro, and, as you predicted, doesn't work. I am going to DL netscape and see what happens. I see nothing wrong with keeping netscape open simply for the purpose of these boards.

I am good friends with the IT people. However, they are getting tremendous pressure from above re cutting down on bandwidth use. Apparently some people have basically been watching TV all day using Real player etc., which has been sucking up bandwidth. They have been specifically instructed to try and cut out all non-work bandwidth use.

I'll report back...

OK, so I DL'd netscape 7.0 and can now use both of the alternative ip's. Again, let's see what happens on Monday when I use the firm's connection.

Thanks for all of the help!
