I'm gonna take shit about weather from a guy from D.C.?
S.F.'s famous fogginess is a microclimate phenomenon. From other parts of the Bay Area, you can watch the fog smother the northern Peninsula --- that's why you see those photos of the bridge getting enveloped. Newsflash: if the fog was where the photographer was standing, it wouldn't look like this:
Instead, it would look like this:

Where is the photographer standing? On top of the bridge? Is the top of the bridge in Contra Costa county, too?

If I were an out-of-towner, I would stay on the waterfront, and I would stay away from Fisherman's Wharf.* Unless you've got an invite to stay at Robin Williams's house, that means the Embarcadero. S.F. has some nice boutique hotels other than the Vitale, though. The Kimpton Group has a bunch of three- and four-star boutique hotels in S.F.; if you want something with more character than the Marriott and a choice as to neighborhood, they've got some variety. I think there's a French outfit that does some boutique hotels in S.F., but I can't remember the name.
Other reason to stay on the Embarcadero: If your wife and/or kid want to ride the cable car, don't take Powell-Mason or Powell-Hyde --- your kid will turn 18 before you get to the front of the line. Instead, from the foot of California Street (at California and Market), take the California line up to Nob Hill. Once you're at the top of the hill, see Grace Cathedral (a 3/4 scale of Notre Dame with replica Ghiberti doors to the Battistero di San Giovanni in Florence). Then smuggle the kid into the Tonga Room at the Fairmont for the indoor tiki bar rainshower.
The Harvard Club of San Francisco is housed at Orrick. You will be provided with accomodations, but will be expected to bill 2,200. The accomodations since they moved out of the old Federal Reserve to new digs in SoMa are seriously diminished. There isn't even an ATM within six fucking blocks of that place.
*Apologies for presuming to know what is best for all families.

Did Barbara finally get the sale of internal combustion engines banned in the Golden State?

If you come, Belden Place is the place for SF GAs not to meet up after work, as you know. You may want to go there while you're here so you can begin participating in the Slave Inside Joke of the Day that Isn't Very Inside. Welcome to the Cool Kids!

Muir woods should be, unless traffic is bad.
Can't you just take the same route as in Basic Instinct? (or was that to somewhere else)
|
Muir Woods is good. If it's a nice weekend you're screwed, because everyone and their brother is headed there. Go there during the week if possible. If you go to Stinson Beach keep your eyes on the damn road, because if you don't they'll be winching your rental car up from about 500 ft.
A little bit further is Point Reyes, and it's less crowded.

Not sure that the Kimpton Group is a French outfit. Perhaps you're thinking of the Cafe de la Presse next door. Room service arrangements does not, in itself, imply ownership.

I actually like the Triton. It's pretty inexpensive but has loads of character.
Hank would like the nightly wine bar happy hour for all guests in the lobby. Unsure whether he would like the tarot card reader who'll tell your fortune (which I think is only once a week.) I mean, after getting the DEATH card so many times in a row, the whole experience gets a bit old.

Agreed. Haven't stayed at 'em all, but FWIW:
Triton -- Recommend if you need to be near the financial district. See above.
Monticello -- Jefferson would not be proud. Maybe if Mitchell Bros. is on Hank's list. Otherwise, feh.
Galleria Park -- Ok if your business is nearby, but the building is a bit tattered. Plus, Sidd hangs out in the lobby, so be forewarned.
Harbour Court -- Perhaps the nicest I've seen.
Argonaut -- A new property, and this nautical themed-hotel is not bad. Atticus, you'll be sad to hear that this hotel is in the middle of the wharf. What can I say -- sometimes the cheesy tourist shit is a requirement.
