If it works, leave Explorer as the default for now. One possibility is that McAfee requires a plug in that isn't installed for Mozilla because you didn't have it on your computer when you installed McAfee. Beyond that, I'd have to sit down with your machine.
I've found Mozilla to be easy to use, but it's still rough around a few edges. You may be better off waiting a few months for the next version to come out if you continue having problems.
* If it doesn't, go to Tools->Internet Options, then select the "Programs" tab and click the box that says something like "Have Explorer check if its the default."

It works with IE. I have to do it kinda backwards, though, and go to the McAfee site (which comes up in IE) and then ask it to check for updates that way. Anyway, if anyone knows how to do it through Firefox that would be fabulous.

What kind of compatibility have you found with Firefox? I have been hesitant to use it because of web-based necessitied like westlaw, etc.

I don't use Firefox at work for various reasons that have nothing to do with its performance, but I've noticed very few compatibility problems. Mozilla is based upon the same code as Netscape Navigator, so much of it is rock solid from a browsing perspective.
Flash is a pain, in that the plug-in has to be redownloaded each time you update, although this may have been fixed in the last round of updates. Java seems to be slow, but that could also be my broke-ass home computer (time for an upgrade, see, e.g. my posts in the Apple page).
I've never used Westlaw with it, but Lexis works fine. I seem to recall West has or had some sort of weird plug in for downloading that might not work if it's Explorer specific, but Firefox seems to handle Netscape plug-ins pretty well, except that you may have to reinstall when upgrading (see above, and again, this may now be fixed).
On the plus side, I've almost forgotten what a pop-up is, and the program is very fast to load. Also, the interface is very efficient -- small little icons, only the essential ones by default, you can change the skin, etc. I also like tab browsing, which seems to work better on Mozilla than on Navigator 7.x. Navigator seems to get bogged down. Mozilla doesn't care.
Mozilla doesn't run ActiveX, so anything that depends on it is incompatible. This is in my view a good thing, as ActiveX is evil, and one of the most dangerous of Bill's "improvements" to the Internet.

What is ActiveX? I think that must be what McAfee uses. It sounds familiar, in any event.

Yeah, what is ActiveX? Because it seems somehow integral to windows browsing, but I don't see it working, which to me means it shouldn't be trusted.

ActiveX is a M$FT-developed scripting protocol used to write controls for websites. In English, it enables websited to dance and sing. Unfortunately, it also enables malicious coders to put spyware on your HDD and hijack your machine, something I am sure Bill never thought of...
From the ActiveX website
"ActiveX® controls are among the many types of components that use COM technologies to provide interoperability with other types of COM components and services. ActiveX controls are the third version of OLE controls (OCX), providing a number of enhancements specifically designed to facilitate distribution of components over high-latency networks and to provide integration of controls into Web browsers. These enhancements include features such as incremental rendering and code signing, to allow users to identify the authors of controls before allowing them to execute. Follow the links below to learn more about ActiveX."

Namecalling? That's so beneath you. I liked the sound of simple tings. That's all.
Besides, you're the one that started with the simple tings. I just quoted you. so there.

So then, can I do printer sharing? If so, how does that get set up?

I thought you were tech-savvy. I feel cheated and betrayed. Please tell me that you don't use AOL too.

I am tech-savvy. To an extent. This is new turf for me. I never had to printer share something before. In the past, I would buy 2 printers. That's why in a house with 2 people there are 2 desktop computers, 2 laptop computers, 4 televisions, 2 vcrs and 3 tivos and 3 stereos. Sharing is new to me in many ways.
And AOL? God no. That's for the kiddies. I tried it once many many years ago when it was new and only because I got 1000 FREE MINUTES and found out that it was crap. Used about 10 minutes and then uninstalled.
