That's my read, too. I'm not sure why he and Bush hung on.

In other news, here's George Allen the day after the election in Florida, "we'll need to move America forward as soon as those votes are cast."

I enjoy a recount as much as the next guy, but I think it will be amusing listening to the Rs justify turning Virginia into a legal free-for-all.

Maybe not NJ, but I wouldn't have been shocked. Probably would have saved a few House seats, too.

Because that is who they are -- bitter enders. Don't do anything to admit a mistake until it has already cost you big. Loyalty and resolve are virtues to a point.

Heh. Hell, when you have a state-wide election as close as that, you have to expect a recount. Nothing wrong with it.

Bottom line though, is that the history of VA recounts (from what I hear) tend to show very little movement. That state runs a pretty tight ship.

I'm not so sure. It would constitute an admission of pussification (or worse, even error) by Bush in the Face of Terror.

You win some votes, sure, but K-Lo probably commits hari-kari (Hi, Burger!), and who wants that?

I think Monday would have been too late (perhaps even worse than today) because it would look too much like last minute pandering. But two weeks ago? Definitely.

Another Rove misread?

Clearly they had this planned before last night, because Gates was ready to step in. So I have to think either Rumsfeld agreed to resign only if the Rs lost the election (or Bush wanted him to resign only if), or Rove figured that they could run on their policy/stay the course, and still win, and to resign then would have made the rout even worse by acknowledging the major issue.

1. Does Bush push the nomination while the Rs still control the Senate?

2. Do the Ds filibuster?

3. Does Bush use a recess appointment?

I'd say any confirmation hearing is an opportunity for a public hearing on the war. I suspect there are a lot of Republicans who would like to speak against the war at this point, especially the ones who pulled out victories by less than 1 or 2%. So I'd guess recess.

You think Bush would do a recess appointment without even a hearing and an attempt to vote on the nomination? Maybe in 2002, but the brass on Bush's balls has tarnished considerably since then.

Did rummy resign effective upon the confirmation of his successor? Because that would get a vote right quick.

I'd guess no, no, and no. But I do suspect that there will be some very interesting confirmation hearings, even if the GOP maintains control of the Senate.

I think that I read that he's on Jim Baker's "wise men" committee. Looks like the Velvet Hammer is back in business.
