Because she was really hot?

My guess is that the actress sells more papers than the waitress who gets killed in a similar manner.

Today, my local metro section, fwiw, reports at length on the two people from the area who were killed in the helicopter crash in Iraq yesterday, the competency hearing of the Baylor basketball player who killed his roommate, a NASA ceremony for people who died going to space, the results of an investigation into the deaths of a 4 year old and grandmother who died in a fire at Texas A&M last year, the death of the guy who arrested Lee Harvey Oswold (diabetes), and a variety of notices of cops/prosecutors arresting/charging people for murder and illegal immigration. Oh, and they're looking for info on a body. If you know someone who was shot and left in the bed of a pickup truck, call 713-222-TIPS.

Didn't we determine that you de-arm children in Sierra Leone when you buy diamonds? That said, I love diamonds. And sapphires. I would want a boatload of each for my 40th. Or a grand piano with diamond keys and sapphire accidentals.

Seeing as there's also an article about a 7 year old girl's murder, in the same section, your question is better put as "why do they report on murders of anyone no one knows?" And the answer is because it's news--the public is interested in serious crime; and it might help solve the case. I bet the Times would report on the murder of a faceless i-banker or lawyer too on the regional pages.
Actually, I was thinking about the short-order cook who was gunned down for no reason, who gets a blurb on page 36. Or the wife of a part-time construction worker who lives in the projects who was mugged and killed on her way home from work. Those stories are no less interesting or newsworthy than the actress who was shot and killed on the Lower East Side.

Maybe it's because you're not here, but every paper in this city has made it a big deal. I don't know what about this story (besides her being an actress) distinguishes it from any other similar story.

Light beer

If you were to attend a party full of erotically stylish people, what variety of light beer would you want in the keg?

Assume that the purchaser of the beer generally refuses to touch light beer unless there is nothing else in the vicinity and in fact takes pride in the fact she knows nothing about light beer. Also assume that there is no force in the universe that will make her purchase Coors Light.

The non-light beer will be Shiner Bock, and there will be some sort of vodka concoction.

I like the never seen before, and know a jeweler who does very nice work. My wife doesn't do new diamonds (e.g., blood stones), but maybe a set with saphires or emerelds. And a chef.
If she's still twitchy about diamonds after the Angolan cease fire & deBeers' tracking system, watch the emeralds, too - FARC, you know. (Besides, if you went with cushion cuts you'd probably have to buy the diamonds loose and have them set, and they'd be a major bitch to match, so it would take a while.) And I guess rubies are out (you may know them as the SPDC, but they'll always be SLORC to me). The best amethysts are from nastier sections of central Africa, as well (if her birthday is in Feb, that's her birthstone). Sapphires may help fund rebuilding in post-tsunami Sri Lanka, even if the Tigers skim off the top to fund bombing campaigns, so those might be a better bet, and much more affordable.

If you want a really non-violent gem stone, if she likes orange Utah sunstones are nice ....

Me, I'd like a vacation. I'd like a week at the Lake Placid Lodge, actually, if the food is still as good as I remember.

BR(actually, if you want to blow bucks on jewelry and she has political sensitivities, I'd go with pearls - a nice pair of tahitian/south sea earrings should impress, 11-12mm minimum, and if you're smart about it you can get them for $500 or less)C

That watch looks vaguely like the profile view of a TIT, so that may explain why you like it.

I'd want no keg of any beer. Beer breath is not erotically stylish.

You can help with the vodka concoction, then. What sort of vodka concoction is erotically stylish?

Something with vanilla and raspberries. How would Stoli vanilla mixed with Chambord work? Could be bad, could be very very good.

I'm not a huge fan, but I think Amstel is the only option.

Good call. The Netherlands has an erotically stylish atmosphere.

Clearly it can't be German beer. Or Belgian.
