So when the argument devolves from "my team is is more talented and thus more likely to win" to "my team is of greater moral character, higher aesthetic value, and is as close to the abstract Platonic Ideal of sports team-ness as exists," it is hard to see it as anything but masturbation.

The only thing worse that responding to a Red Sox vs. Yankees post is responding to a response to a Red Sox vs. Yankees post.
...
Wait a minute.

PS - Yes, I fucking hate the Sox with the fury of a thousand suns - but as an unbiased baseball fan - can you even root for these guys?
At least in '04, the "Idiots" were fun underdogs.
Now - other than Papi (great guy and clutch stud), Beckett (kid ALWAYS delivers), Ellsbury and Pedroia (always love to see energetic rooks) and maybe Papelpon - you've got a team of whiny, overpaid assholes, far worse than anyone on the Yanks (see Manny - possibly a bigger douche than Bonds), Schilling, Taveras, 'Tek, JD (one game does not a game make) Drew, Lugo, etc.
I give it 2 years before you guys nationally surpass us as the dicks of Baseball.
PPS - Matt Holliday - MVP

You guys have been working on that title for decades; I wouldn't be so presumptuous to think we could take it from you that quickly.
I note that your "other thans" includes a bunch of guys like Becket, Ellsbury, and Papelbon who are likely to still be on the team five years from now, while your list of whiny, overpaid assholes includes a bunch of guys who have earned themselves one-way bus tickets. Can the same be said for the Yanks?
And how can anyone NOT root for that big-smiling Papi, always the first at the plate with a high five?

Then this morning, I see him when I'm walking to the subway from the gym and he's walking to the gym and he comes over and we start talking, or rather, he says something and I just stand there looking like a deer in headlights and feeling like I'm going to vomit because he's so hot. This is happening all the time now. When I'm alone with him and we can actually make out and whatever, I feel fine. When I can't do that, I get all tongue-tied and feel like 14-yo gwinky with big glasses and braces and bad hair who doesn't know what to do because a boy is talking to her. I know I am not cool, but I have not felt this uncool in years. It's pissing me off.

Translation: I am actually not really having a problem at all.

Saturday afternoon, I dreamed I had sex with Ironweed. There was no cake involved.
Probably you are not acting as weird as you think you are. So don't worry about it! Stop beating yourself up! Did you have this issue at dinner? Probably not, since you had just fucked him.
At worst, this is a very minor problem. Not a big one. And you are having lots of wild animal sex.
ETA what did I do to kill the board? Should I redact out the sex with whatshisface? Hmmmm.

BTW, your team sure punished the 10 fans who stuck around for the fourth quarter, and thought they were being rewarded with a great comeback.

Better than being punished for 4 quarters watching the most impotent running and passing game ever to hit football. Thank god for special teams.

I may have to buy a few cuts. I was that impressed.
*For reasons I am unable to articulate, the name "Wendy" drives me crazy. Even though I know a Wendy. It drive me almsot as crazy as "Josephine" does. Putting an "ine" on the end of a male name is not a female name. It is wrong.

It is a pretty good album -- been a while.
My favorite is still The Ghost of Tom Joad.

I'm very very glad that I chose to go to LA this weekend to have wild animal sex instead of seeing that game in person.
I will say, though, that that game is a demonstration of what it's like to be a Houston fan in four quarters. Team sucks beyond the telling. Team miraculously shows amazing promise and gets everyone excited that maybe, possibly, this is our year, game, decade, quarter, whatever. Team crashes and burns more dramatically than anyone previously thought possible leaving a more crushing void in the soul than if they just merely sucked.
