Pretty good guess though.
"Aha, another term from that inexhaustible store of rude British slang expressions (though it is also well-known in Australia). It means that the person addressed is contemptible or worthless, a scrounger. Though it can be a relatively mild insult among friends, you should avoid saying it to strangers unless you want a smack in the mush or a punch up the bracket.
The original form—in the nineteenth century—was toe rag. It referred to the strips of cloth that convicts or tramps wrapped around their feet as an inadequate substitute for socks. The first recorded use is by J F Mortlock in his Experiences of a Convict of 1864: “Stockings being unknown, some luxurious men wrapped round their feet a piece of old shirting, called, in language more expressive than elegant, a ‘toe-rag’ ”. It didn’t take long to become a term of abuse—in 1875 a book on British circus life said that “Toe rags is another expression of contempt ... used ... chiefly by the lower grades of circus men, and the acrobats who stroll about the country, performing at fairs”.
It seems to have come to wider British knowledge and use from the 1970s on, largely because it was aired in the ITV police series The Sweeney about the London mobile detective force called the flying squad (rhyming slang: flying squad = Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street), a programme that delighted in using London slang.
The tow-rag spelling is sometimes seen because people have lost the link to the original sense, long since obsolete."
What did people do before Google? Toe rags.

And Jun does have a point about Korean guys (and by "Korean" I really mean Korean-American). Many (if not most) of them do tend to want to date "good girls" who go to church, take care of the man, and never swear. Needless to say, I haven't dated many Asian men (which is not to say that I wouldn't). That said, it is a huge generalization for Jun to say that all Korean guys or all Asian guys are like this. I think Jun is just going through a twinkie phase and she'll get over it. Plus, a lot of Asian guys wouldn't date a girl that big (by Asian standards, she's really fat). But at least she's dated Asian guys in the past. I know some Asian chicks who categorically have never and will never date an Asian man. I think that's about as fucked up as being a rice daddy.
|
In all fairness, I've known a number of Asian women who have said "no more asian guys ever" at various points. I don't think (or it didn't appear to me) to be a self-loathing, rabid assymilation, or even really a rebellion thing - they dated some guys from similar backgrounds, whatever the expectations were that they encountered pissed them off, and they said "well then, fuck all y'all." Was their conclusion that "all asian guys think you should be [blah blah blah]" obviously a silly overgeneralization? 'Course. But I don't think that necessarily indicates self loathing, or even rebellion.
Everyone trims their dating prospects based on some experienced correlation to undesirable behavior and, frankly, it is rational to do so. I myself excluded huge sections of the white male population from my dating pool without rights of review or appeal, including some who shared quite similar backgrounds (e.g.: all rural southerners known to wear baseball/gas station caps). I've know jews who refuse to date jews, Catholics who refuse to date catholics, white people who went black and ain't ever goin' back. I've even known a number of people who refuse to date someone of their backgroung, citing all sorts of neurotic, unacceptable behavior and expectations, yet who insist that they will only marry someone from within their own group. Is that self loathing? Sometimes, yeah, but not always.
In any event, the "no asian men, all asian men suck" statement sounds to me like youthful naivete, though perhaps not youthful rebellion. Eventually she'll figure out that no one but another asian will ever really understand just why asian men piss her off so much.

Just curious and interested.

It's like this. I knew a guy like this in college. All he wanted was a subservient asian chick to marry. He even told me that probably the best way to do that is "mail order bride" in a semi-humorous way. Here's the problem, most asian-american guys are raised by their "from asia" mom. No woman (caucasian) will be able to meet this standard. Asian moms are generally stay-at-homes and their goal in life appears to be to take care of the men in the house. Cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. They get out into the real world and when the asian-american guy says to the caucasian girl "hey honey, when you do my laundry this week, can you make sure to get the ass stains out of my shorts like my mom did? And I want chicken for dinner."
Caucasian chick says "fuck you, who do you think I am, your mother?" Even once asian guy has moved out of parents' house, he can always go back and mom will cook, clean and do laundry for him. Not many caucasian chicks will rise to that standard, nor will want to. It's not that they don't want to date caucasian chicks, it's just that caucasian chicks are usually not subservient enough for the asian-american males. Does that make sense?

[NYT article on teenage girls and younger dressing like sluts.]
Query: how sluttish are some of the fashions actually described? spaghetti-strap tank tops? Camis with built in bras? I wear stuff like that all the time. Is that supposed to be somehow worse than the tube tops I ran about in (braless) in the waning years of the '70s? Is this just another version of the "oh, we're fuckin' boomers, this shit never happened to anyone before" schtick? I mean, you want to talk about scandalous and provocative clothing rebellion among the young, check out 1918-1928 when they were running about BOBBING THEIR HAIR AND WEARING SHEER STOCKINGS !!!

Is Atticus really a rice daddy? For real?
I think the reason you don't see white chicks w/Asian guys is because Asian men have been portrayed as asexual, effeminiate, geeky, or just not masculine enough. Hence, white women aren't sexually attracted to them. It's a dying stereotype, I hope, but still lingers. Another reason might be that Asian men do tend to prefer to date Asian women, maybe because they're more conservative, or maybe b/c they feel that it's futile to go for white chicks? This is kind of a chicken-or-the-egg type of issue I guess.
Let me tell you a little secret about Asian chicks who date rice daddies. First of all, good-looking rice daddies are few and far between. I know of 2. Most Asian chicks who date rice daddies (or only date white guys) tend to be ugly. Or at least uglier than the Asian girls who date Asian guys. With notable exceptions, most Asian girls who only date Asian guys tend to be very, very thin and attractive. This is a well-known and anecdotally documented fact in the Korean community. We often joke about it and make fun of the white guy who thinks he's scored some hot Asian ass, when in reality, the woman on his arm has been beat with an ugly stick. Even my ex-BF, who is a borderline rice daddy (but not really), has dated at least 3 fugly Asian chicks. The white girls he's dated though, are all pretty attractive. You can imagine how it makes the Hottie feel, can't you?

Some of us were not old enough in the waning years of the '70s to have "braless" matter so I don't think if we wore tube tops it would have been considered slutty.

So, if I married an Asian guy, would I inherit a mother in law who would cook for me and do my laundry? Bc that would be really helpful.
and yeah it makes sense. its pathetic, but it makes sense.

NO! NO NO! If you married an asian guy, his mother would cook and clean for him. NOT YOU. Never for you! Her job is to make you look like a lazy bitch for not doing it for him yourdamnself. And then she would talk about you behind your back to the other asian moms about how lazy you are and how you (and any other woman on earth) are not good enough for him and how lazy you are and how no one ever taught you how to clean properly or dust or do laundry.

True enough. But this applies even if the son marries an Asian woman. It's funny. My parents want me to marry a Korean guy, but my mom doesn't want me to have a Korean mother-in-law. Maybe I need to find a Korean guy whose mother is dead.

1) I dont know what Atticus's deal is but he thinks my mentioning rice daddies (ie white guy's with asian fetishes) dehumanizes asian women, which I dont get.
2) I know a hard core rice daddy from hell, who majored in chinese, tagught ESL, but quit when he coudlnt tell if his students would be men or women by their name, hangs out at the starbucks at the ESL school at NYU, and goes for women who dont speak English (he acutally has a translator- fucking sick). his asian chicks are not so hot but not ugly. I know a korean girl who is considered a knock out and does not date asian men though she wont admit as such. Her sister, who looks like Jun in face and body, is the same. Interesting
