Looks like the Pierce Brosnan, will he or won't he? is getting to be a pretty definitive "won't he."
I'm down for Clive Owen. I have Taxwonk down for Colin Firth, and Hank down for Will Ferrell. There is no fucking way it's Ioan Gruffudd --- the world isn't ready for that. It's barely ready for a guy named Clive.
(It's not like we have anything else to talk about, apparently.)

For those interested in my avatar's oeuvre, check out I'll Sleep When I'm Dead. It's the latest Clive Owen-Mike Hodges collaboration. He plays a former East End gangster who seeks retribution when his younger brother turns up dead. That sounds like the plot of Get Carter, but this is much more leisurely.
Some women on the board will want to know that Mr. Owen wears his hair long and has a beard through most of the film. They won't find that attractive, unless they want a lot of buildup for the brief period of time he is clean shaven.
The film is in limited release. If you want to see it in the Bay Area, you'd better make plans now. It's gotten no publicity and will not be the arthouse hit that Croupier was.
I thought Clive Owen was on record as saying that the Bond role would be boring. I do think he'd make a fantastic Bond, but I can't disagree that the role is a straightjacket. I don't really think that Bond is relevant in a post-9/11 world. It's too difficult to write a movie where someone is trying to blow up the world, when someone is really trying to blow up the world. They'd really have to reinvent the franchise, and there's too much risk in doing that to justify it.

As opposed to "Sue the Trucker" from Survivor, who is more than willing to piss on her enemies in their times of need.

I think I ended up throwing out something like 40 video tapes, a lot of invitations to events I never went to, some notes from law school, some directories that are probably ten years out-dated, and some christmas cards that had no accompanying notes. Usually these cleaning projects take forever, because I start lingering over the crap, but for whatever reason, I didn't really get nostalgic over that much, and it wasn't a big deal to throw things away. I think I finally realized that my hauling a lot of this crap from one house to another just makes moving that much more of a pain in the ass.
Sort of related, but unrelated to the cleaning, I did end up writing four or five e-mails last week to friends I'd lost touch with. I got one response, and I'm glad that I contacted her.

Has anyone here thrown away all their law school crap? You know, the note pads, the outlines, the leftover textbooks you couldn't sell back, etc? I finally threw away my three boxes (one for each year), and fuck did it ever feel good.
Almost as good as getting head from a girl who isn't expecting reciprocation, but not quite.

My notes, such as they were, went in the trash at the end of each semester, as did many of my books. I always found it very satisfying to get rid of the books at the end of the semester. I frequently considered burning them.
The last few books I threw out a few years ago. I don't recall feeling much of anything except pleasure at the fact I wouldn't have to move them again.

I think it's time for Uma Thurman and a little role reversal.

I thought I had guessed Clive Owen.
It's possible that last time the discussion took place I felt he was a bit young. However, I will reconsider at this time and put my chips on Clive. Pete Postlewaite is a possible dark horse in thie race.

They said the same thing when the Cold War ended. They were right, but it didn't stop the Bond machine from trying. I fear the mere fact that once again the franchise is irrelevant won't stop them this time, either.
ETA that I am very muc looking forward to I'll Sleep When I'm Dead. It's a shame it's only planned for art-house release. From what I;ve seen in the trailers and read of the story, it could be a blockbuster.

notes, etc. were long gone, but I held onto my books until the last move. I have a crazy friend who thinks that law school books would be perfect for the library room she doesn't have (non-lawyer, obviously), so she took all my law school books off my hands. I think they are sitting in her garage gathering dust. Or maybe in a closet somewhere.

Is it Clive Owen who plays the detective in that british series called Second Sight or something like that? I like him in that.
Anyhoo, I thought people feared that someone was trying to blow up the world in the cold war era, what with the nuclear threat and all, (regardless of whether the perception actually matched reality), and that is when Bond was in his heyday, so why would the franchise have to change now?
