He should keep it; it befits his manic style.

I love these too. Have you tried the tart and tangy ones? Like another poster does with Starburst, I pick out the flavors of Necco wafers I don't like (the licorice ones and sometimes the white ones) and toss them.

You toss the licorice ones - that's heresy! But I will forgive you if you gather them all up and mail them this way. BTW, I ate two rolls last week and couldn't figure out what flavor the white ones are. Pink is wintergreen, so that's not it...

Edited to add that I just found this: NECCO Wafer rolls contain 8 flavors and colors: lemon (yellow); orange (orange); lime (green); clove (purple); cinnamon (white); wintergreen (pink); licorice (black); and chocolate (brown). (I would have never guessed it.)

Edited again to say WTF? I think I need some sleep. Can some superpower delete the first post, pls?

A good friend who grew up in Long Beach swears this to be the case. She recalled that having a No Doubt sticker on your car in the late 80's/early 90's was like a badge of entry into a secret club. She walked out of the last No Doubt show she attended.

In contrast, I've always thought they sucked. Musically. Lyrically. Their Videos. The hype about "Gwen" and her sense of "style" and her lovelife. All of it sucks.

"Tom Sawyer" from Rush sounds great when you're a 10-year old boy. I don't own any Rush albums, so I don't think I can count them as a guilty pleasure.

I suppose "I Just Died In Your Arms" from Cutting Crew would count as a guilty pleasure if I ever listened to the CD that's lurking somewhere in my collection.

I suppose Toad The Wet Sprocket might qualify as a guilty pleasure. If The Onion has made fun of a band you liked, they probably aren't cool. In my defense, I offer that I met the band my first year in college and they were cool to me.

I refuse to believe that Better Off Dead is a guilty pleasure. It's an unabashed joy, just like the lovely Monique Jeunot.

I like his avatar fine too; I just liked the website and thought of Ty when I saw it. There are many fine images to choose from, should he wish.

And it came from BBBoy, so I get to feel like I'm sticking it to them -- in however minor and petty a way -- every time I post.

Futile Pursuit of Happiness

This is an excellent article from the NYT Magazine, and I highly recommend it: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/07/ma...HAPPINESS.html

It begins:

"If Daniel Gilbert is right, then you are wrong. That is to say, if Daniel Gilbert is right, then you are wrong to believe that a new car will make you as happy as you imagine. You are wrong to believe that a new kitchen will make you happy for as long as you imagine. You are wrong to think that you will be more unhappy with a big single setback (a broken wrist, a broken heart) than with a lesser chronic one (a trick knee, a tense marriage). You are wrong to assume that job failure will be crushing. You are wrong to expect that a death in the family will leave you bereft for year upon year, forever and ever. You are even wrong to reckon that a cheeseburger you order in a restaurant -- this week, next week, a year from now, it doesn't really matter when -- will definitely hit the spot. That's because when it comes to predicting exactly how you will feel in the future, you are most likely wrong. "

The Order: Secular condescension. In defense of Vin Diesel

I found the irreligious condescension of this review amusing.

Quote:
The Order (Helgeland, 2003): My general rule is: give me Aramaic runes and whispered chanting on the soundtrack, and I'm pretty much yours for the evening. The rule held for The Order, Helgeland's mildly interesting attempt at a religious mumbo-jumbo thriller, one of my all-time favorite genres because of its tendency to slyly reveal organized religion as a crock, and mock the Catholic Church in the process. This is one of those movies in which there is no such thing as a sunny day, a film so drained of color that it might as well be black and white. It's an oppressive environment to create, and Helgeland might have done better if he had created it in service of something more intriguing; as it stands, the plot, involving a way to bypass the Church on the way to heaven, is only mildly interesting. Heath Ledger's minimalist/incompetent approach doesn't help matters, but there was more than enough pseudo-theological absurdity to tide me over for two hours. B-

And of course, BRC should appreciate his defense of Vin Diesel.Vin link

According to the Necco web site: The assorted roll contains 8 flavors & colors: Lemon(yellow);Orange(orange);Lime(green);Clove(purple);Cinnamon(white);Wintergreen(pink);Licorice(bl ack);and Chocolate(brown)

I could swear that in some rolls the purple is not clove but I must be confusing the wafers with the tangy kind or Conversation Hearts (also made by New England Candy Co).

Fun facts about Necco wafers: http://www.necco.com/neccofun.htm

Apparently Admiral Byrd was a bigger fan than either of us -- 2 1/2 tons!
