NFH's pic is more like something in between a goatee and a soul patch. A soul patch is facial hair between the lower lip and not more than half way down the chin. Here's Zappa sporting one.

Mindset list for class of 2007

THE BELOIT COLLEGE MINDSET LIST FOR THE CLASS OF 2007®

Most students entering college this fall were born in 1985:

1. Ricky Nelson, Richard Burton, Samantha Smith, Laura Ashley, Orson Welles, Karen Ann Quinlan, Benigno Aquino, and the U.S. Football League have always been dead.

2. They are not familiar with the source of that “Giant Sucking Sound.”

3. Iraq has always been a problem.

4. “Ctrl + Alt + Del” is as basic as “ABC.”

5. Paul Newman has always made salad dressing.

6. Pete Rose has always been a gambler.

7. Bert and Ernie are old enough to be their parents.

8. An automatic is a weapon, not a transmission.

9. Russian leaders have always looked like leaders everyplace else.

10. The snail darter has never been endangered.

11. There has always been a screening test for AIDS.

12. Gas has always been unleaded.

13. They never heard Howard Cosell call a game on ABC.

14. The United States has always had a Poet Laureate.

15. Garrison Keillor has always been live on public radio and Lawrence Welk has always been dead on public television.

16. Their families drove SUVs without “being fuelish.”

17. There has always been some association between fried eggs and your brain.

18. They would never leave their calling card on someone’s desk.

19. They have never been able to find the “return” key.

20. Computers have always fit in their backpacks.

21. Datsuns have never been made.

22. They have never gotten excited over a telegram, a long distance call, or a fax.

23. The Osmonds are just talk show hosts.

24. Undergraduate college athletes have always been a part of the NBA and NFL draft.

25. They have always “grazed” for food.

26. Three-point shots from “downtown” have always been a part of basketball.

27. Test tube babies are now having their own babies.

28. Stores have always had scanners at the checkout.

29. The Army has always driven Humvees.

30. Adam and PC Junior computers had vanished from the market before this generation went online.

31. The Statue of Liberty has always had a gleaming torch.

32. They have always had a PIN number.

33. Banana Republic has always been a store, not a puppet government in Latin America.

34. Car detailing has always been available.

35. Directory assistance has never been free.

36. The Jaycees have always welcomed women as members.

37. There has always been Lean Cuisine.

38. They have always been able to fly Virgin Atlantic.

39. There have never been dress codes in restaurants.

40. Doctors have always had to deal with “reasonable and customary fees” and patients have always had controls placed on the number of days they could stay in a hospital.

41. They have always been able to make photocopies at home.

42. Michael Eisner has always been in charge of Disney.

43. They have always been able to make phone calls from planes.

44. Yuppies are almost as old as hippies.

45. Rupert Murdoch has always been an American citizen.

46. Strawberry Fields has always been in New York.

47. Rock and Roll has always been a force for social good.

48. Killer bees have always been swarming in the U.S.

49. They have never seen a First Lady in a fur coat.

50. Don Imus has always been offending someone in his national audience.

In all fairness it should be understood that students entering college this fall do have a few items on their own lists that will separate them from many of their mentors:

1. For many of them today, it’s all about the “bling, bling.”

2. They know who the “Heroes in a half shell” are.

3. Peeps are not a candy, they are your friends.

4. They have been “dissing”and “burning” things all their lives.

5. They can expect to get a ticket for “ricing out their wheels.”

6. They knew how to pop a Popple and trade a Pog.

7. They can still sing the rap chorus to the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and the theme song from “Duck Tales.”

Vegans, Leather and FLO$ Spoiler

ThrasherFan, curious why no eggs, milk or seafood.

A vegetarian friend took the stance that she wouldn't eat anything that was sentient. After much research, she and her SO concluded that shrimp are not sentient.

But chickens are going to lay eggs no matter if you take them or not. And there are farms with free range chickens. I get eggs from one here in Minn. where the chickens live better than I do (or close).

As for leather -- there are a lot of leather goods that aren't top quality so I bet a lot of the cowhides from beef cows get used (how else could Target sell Isaac Mizrahi suede jackets and skirts for $39.99?).

Finally, FLOM ---- spoiler space

more spoiler space

even more spoiler

OK. I am glad Erin wasn't jerky enough to pick Wade just because she thought he was a more sure thing. She would have looked like the ultimate beeotch. I could tell from her body language that she'd pick Chad because she kept her distance from Wade. Poor guy -- the more she talked about how wonderful he was and how he fit her every criteria, the more hopeful he looked.

But I am flat out gobsmacked that Chad took her over the money. He must have been banking on there being another twist and the network wanting a happy ending because anyone would be a fool to choose someone you've been "dating" along with 14 other people under completely artificial circumstances for 5 weeks over $1MM. And I'm a hopeless romantic and still think he is nuts given the short shelf life of reality TV dating show relationships. At least she was classy enough to give him half of her extra million.

Other vegan/PETA types out there: is that legit or bullshit?

I vote "bullshit," but I'm perfectly willing to use the excuse myself when asked by the squeamish about any leather or other dead animal parts I happen to be wearing. Anything made last season is officially designated "vintage" in such cases.

BR(Actually, that's not true. It never occurred to me to wear fur until PETA's methods & statements started really, really pissing me off a few years ago; now I wear it, and look damn good, just to undermine their cause and hopefully piss off their members. Now if the squeamish ask me I tend to explain exactly that in the hopes it will make them think twice about where they send their money)C
Sounds like bullshit to me bc someone on tv is potentially a style inspiration to their fans. This encourages the wearing of fur- vintage or not. As if thier audience could tell. As if.

That show was totally scripted. Totally. I have lost all faith in reality tv.

1) She was clearly not interested in Wade, but yet said she was falling for him. Bullshit line number one.

2) Erin never would have picked Chad over two million because that would be just stupid and the odds were very poor he would have pickjed her bc he is out of her league and Erin knew it. Not worth two million dollars. Plus, had she picked Wade, she could keep the cash and probably go after Chad after the show since they live in the same town. Even with a prohibition on seeing him (and I dont know whether there was one against seeing the runner up), how enforceable could that be?

3) Chad would never ever have picked her unless they sweetened the pot or told him he could have the money and the girl which has to be what they did. Unless he had a serious trust fund and the money was superfluous. The fact that he accepted Erin's offer of splitting her riches proves that Chad was in it for the money or that he didnt love her and think long term (which is what he would have to think to not take the money in the first place). If I offered the money, and he took it, I would have been a little affronted. Clearly the producers wanted a happy ending so the show would not be a repeat of round one and we, the viewers, could have some faith restored. Chad should be back on themarket even quicker than Ben Assfleck who will probably have his freedome delayed by a quickie JHo insurance pregnancy, but I digress.

I dont think I can watch any more of these dating, no strategy shows. Too scripted. I will watch the Bob Bachelor though bc I liked him. Then ,that is it.

Actually, I think this one is sort of my fault. I don't think it's fogeyness to think it's a stupid phrase - I've used it since the 7th grade, so it's got to be pretty outdated by now. Even then, we thought it was pretty stupid, in an amusing sort of way.

Some of those really freaked me out.

These are depressing for the young'uns to have missed, because they really missed some excellent bits of american culture ... or something:

39. There have never been dress codes in restaurants.
These I found shocking because it seems to me that someone my age would/wouldn't have done/had these things, too:

This one is strangely on topic:

Good guess on my part: Nixon made a big deal about his wife wearing cloth coats instead of fur to emphasize the difference between wholesome, solid republicans and dissipated, elitist democrats, and it's stuck.

Though several have gone back to it after their husband is out of office.

Anyhow, that means that I haven't been alive anytime when a first lady has worn a fur coat, either.

I love my grandmother's mink pillbox and wear it all winter. I honestly don't see the difference between fur and leather, except that maybe leather's worse because cows are stupid and helpless and minks are vicious little bastards. And I have no sympathy for those idiots at PETA. First, I seriously doubt that sheep feel 'cruelly oppressed,' as a pal told me, because their wool is shorn. It's a fucking haircut. Second, the last time PETA 'liberated' a bunch of minks, a bunch of em got flattened by cars, another bunch starved to death in the wild, and the rest of 'em ran around slaughtering people's household pets in a weasel vampire bloodfest. Great job!

Which raises the question, when on the calendar can you start wearing fur?
