Thanks. My only criticism is that they should be using live models.

They tried that, but the ratings sucked. Penske organized the boycott.

And rather than getting shot down for pure ideological reasons he put a nominee that arguably can be shot for both ideological reasons and the fact that she is not qualified. To exacerbate the situation he makes the claim that she is the most qualified person out there (or words to that effect) which is the exact same thing his dad said about Thomas, and its no less stupid now than it was then, and it was pretty fucking stupid then. My head still hurts trying to discern the analysis whereby anyone could come to such a conclusion about Thomas, it would probably explode trying to figure it out related to Miers. And then you wouldn't have me to moderate this board anymore. What would all of all y'all do then?

And let me add, while I would still not necessarily be thrilled with his choice, I would have more respect for him if he came out and said, "I am nominating Harryette, she's my personal lawyer, that's her qualification, I won the election, so eat cat-shite and......
If he said that then I could at least understand where the flock he is coming from.

I suspect that he had to, given that the right wasn't addressing the reality that Bush figured he was facing. Pretty sure they ran a bunch of names by people, and the groups kept responding like Penske (perhaps without the sirens): JRB, Luttig, POwen. And WH said "can't do it; won't fly; give me someone else." And eventually it got to the point where the WH had to move because the right wasn't going to give him someone confirmable.
|
Do you think Luttig is unconfirmable? I think Bush met him the last time around and liked Roberts more. This time, he didn't want to pick some other appellate judge -- he wanted to pick one of his own people, and so he did. His first term was all about surrounding himself with heavyweights (Powell, Cheney, Rumsfeld). This term is all about surrounding himself with his people.

I remember when they used to have "adult entertainment" places on 14th between H and I where half-naked drug addled girls danced and/or lounged on couches in large window fronts. Being an naive and impressionable christian kid from a farm in the heartland I was impressed. And titiliated. I would walk two blocks out of my way going from the Metro to the firm where I had a summer paralegal job (this was undergrad) just to pass by the windows and enjoy what Henry Miller referred to as a "personal" (if my memory of the CliffNotes of one of those Tropic books serves me).
Those were the days. I miss them [sniff]

Luttig might be the one person mentioned by the right that could be confirmed. I suspect he would have a lot of trouble, especially from women--both because he's not but SOC is and because of his ruling in the VAWA case. But he might ultimately squeak in with 52-53 votes. JRB, Owen, McConnell, Edith Jones -- no way. Clement could get there too, but no one on the right has been pushing her.
BTW, I give him some credit for sticking with his people. Clinton sold out his buddies all too quickly.

I think short of credible allegations of child molestation, SO beating or putting pubical hairs on co-workers coke cans, Luttig, McConnell, Jones, Clement (sorry Ty), and Alito are all confirmable. JRB would be a fight, but a damn interesting one. Owens would get dinged in all likelihood.
Generally I think you are right, but Gonzalez is more qualified for a seat than this lady and he is Bush's people. Or how about Ashcroft?

Still there. They do a brisk business on Friday afternoons when the EOP cuts loose.

I think Jones and McConnell could get confirmed. It's a travesty if they couldn't. Just as bad as if a non-qualified nominee like Miers slips in.
I bet Ty would vote yes for McConnell, and if so, that says something. Clement otoh has a bad taste about her, intangible, but there is something off putting........

That's a joke right? I thought all those places were closed by the time I left, which was when Clinton arrived. Certainly all the storefronts where girls danced and lounged were gone. I know that. RE values have all gone up, there's no way those places went back in or are you fvcking with me?
