The bar reference is in the article. FWIW, after reading it, you might wanna rethink this Lizard/Monkey Alliance for World Dominaton thing.

Or at least rethink entering into any handshake agreements with them...

I'm saying being locked in a room with a bunch of Austen and Bronte psycos turned my loving, sensitive, poetry writing roommate into a misogynist pig. Because Austen serves as a catalyst for women to engage in bonding with their fellow women, most often by providing a medium for them to bitch about men, and as an added bonus, is a writer most men find mind-numbingly boring. Think of what my roommate endured: reading page after page of intrigue about whether one sister or another would marry her way out of a precarious situation* only to be rewarded by three hours of class a week that inevitably ended with him being bitchslapped for the sole reason that he had a penis.

I say again: Austen is evil.

*Seriously: one fucking plot line, ever, for all of them.

Edited to add that her evil is so great that merely having to endure my roommate's suffering by proxy was enough to make me have some pretty obviously strident feelings. Actually, any one book is okay; it's the cumulative effect.

Edited again to spell cumulative correctly

That's why we're all about the secret handshakes. The diddling really isn't as bad as the biting:

"They are risky signals. They have this potential cost to them. I am reaching out to diddle you and I basically have to trust you are not going to bite off my hand,'' she said. "When you accept this imposition, you're communicating your willingness to invest in the relationship as well.''

Personally, I may have enjoyed being the diddlee more if they had opposable thumbs.

What's there to carry on about?

I heart her.

She's playing her heart very close to her breast(s).

We have a standing lunch date the next time I take a lunch vacation to Texas and apparently we will have coed chaperones who are not on my dime, no offence, unless they make it worth my while, nttawwt.

In the meantime:

I just want to clarify this:

Because Austen serves as a catalyst for women to engage in bonding with their fellow women (NTTAWWT), most often by providing a medium for them to bitch about men (NTTAWWT, except that it is so pervasive and so strident when it comes it Austen and the Brontes (Austen especially) that there is something WWT), and as an added bonus, is a writer most men find mind-numbingly boring.

Have you ever actually read the books? While the plot lines do generally center around marriage (duh -- that was critically important for women during JA's time -- what other option did a woman living then have?), there is so much more than "the plot" going on.

If you're reading to find out who marries whom, I suppose the books are rather dull. There is, however, a bit more to it than that.

I'm a little confused about the "female bonding" thing -- not a phenomenon I've encountered at all -- and in fact, I am surprised that a class about Austen would turn into a male-bashing fest. I can see maybe vicarious frustration at the position of dependency most women living then were in, but male-bashing? I don't see it. (Not that I doubt what is, I'm sure, a faithful account of your roomie's experience, I just don't get it.)

Does the lack of oxygen ever make you lightheaded? When we are in public (ie around other women) I poke my husband in the side to remind him to breathe. When we are at home he needs no reminders to consume oxygen, or to expel it.

On Good Old Movies: I cannot believe that the whole day went by and nobody mentioned the Thin Man movies. William Powell and Myrna Loy. Am I the only one who watches these (okay, so I bought the whole set, sue me)?

Str8: Quit fucking with my Bills. It hurts enough without your insensitive comments. Hurter.

Hockey: Atlanta Thrashers. I guess I was the only one who foresaw this. I will leave it right there. Discuss.

University of Chicago researchers studying baboon behavior uncover greeting ritual among males which, oddly enough, resembles the behavior of drunken twentysomethings in bars...

Excerpt: "The animals first make eye contact in a "come hither'' expression and then approach in a swinging gait swagger. Then there's some coy touching of the hips -- or perhaps one might turn his rump to the other. Lips might smack. And then comes the diddling, a technical term for just what you probably think it is -- fondling each other's genitalia."

Flinty, leader of the invading monkey horde, apparently could not be reached for comment.
Sorry, I was out making more new friends. Again. I'm just a very friendly monkey, as other nameless FB posters may or may not attest to.

I'm so friendly, I'm willing to bet my hand is more learned than yours.

That is a whole fucking lot of plastic surgery, liposuction and airbrushing. Looks good and all, but come on.

And that tattoo makes he look like she has Paigow's disco mitt.

Her ribs would be visible as well if she didn't have them taken out.

I made it all the way through Pride and Prejudice, and liked it okay. About a quarter of the way through Sense and Sensibility, I thought to myself "Haven't I read this before?" and quit, but I did sit through the movie. I made it through Wurthering Heights, but only because I had to for a class. Ugh. Oh, and Jane Eyre, which wasn't bad. So 3 and a quarter. Four and quarter is you count the movie Clueless. All of them have marriages and romantic intrigue as a significant plot line(s), though admittedly Wurthering Heights is really about revenge. It should be good; it just isn't.

Say what you want about how good the books are, you only re-enforce my contention: chicks like 'em, guys hate 'em. And chicks really want guys to like them, and when they don't, chicks get mad and start talking about how insensitive guys are. Of course, calling them chicks doesn't help, but whatever.
