Absolutely. Had you not been harshly dumped so often in the past, you probably wouldn't be as great of a lawyer as you are.

You know, even though I'm completely kidding, and I'm sure it's not true, I felt bad writing that.
[Hank-style post] unfortunately I'm not good enough at it to be a litigator, so I had to settle for being a particularly snotty transactional lawyer. [/Hank-style post]

Lazy or the latest and greatest firm benefit?

There are two ATMs in the lobby of my building. One inside (and secure at night) and one outside. There are three more in the buildings across the streets. Our cafe takes credit cards and IOUs (if you are nice to the guys who work there).

They just installed an ATM machine outside of our internal cafeteria. WTF?

I'm going to start lobbying for a Guinness tap in my office. It would save me the trouble of having to cross the street to the bar.

I "ran the wheel" at Friendly's, which means I made the sundaes (and delegated the scooping to lackeys like you). The term comes from the wheel that holds the "chits" (order slips). Making sundaes was fun. Very artful. I'd get angry when the waitresses would let them sit so the whipped cream slid off in a puddle.

Ahh, it's all coming back to me now.

My main Friendly's jobs though were ice cream scooper and then waitress after I turned 18 (they only let us minors do stuff back of the house for some reason).

In the Mexican restaurant, I was trained on every position* except line cook and dishwasher. I started out waitressing, moved to hostess/cashier when I got burned out on that, moved to bartender when I decided that would be fun, and knew how to expedite when needed. I also opened a few restaurants for them as a corporate trainer. Then I decided, for some crazy reason, to go to law school. Hmm. Good idea???

I also had short stints at a catering company and an Italian restaurant.

I trained in every position at Bennigan's and quit when they wanted me to enter their management training program. I became a paralegal instead. Now I specialize in electronic discovery.

Bad career move?

It was a good gig. Way too much fun was had. The best part was I could take vacation/'quit' for weeks at a time (I usually spent February/March skiing) and they would always take me back since I could fill in anywhere.

We had no wheel. We had a line next to the soda fountain that held the tickets above the counter if I recall. We usually had one person on in house and one person on take-out on busy days. My friend who worked there with me (who in some sort of small world coincidence dated one of Mr. Man's roommates in college) and I could do no wrong in the eyes of our manager, so we got away with some pretty stupid stuff. But we weren't hanging out in the back with the dishwashers doing whipits and ruining perfectly good cannisters (heavy duty style) of whipped cream, so no questions asked.

Have you been back to Friendly's any time recently? It just doesn't live up to the way I remember it. Sigh.

You guys are amazing. I hated, hated, hated, hated food service of any kind. I was a hostess at a fancy restaurant, a waitress at same fancy restaurant, served up yogurt in a TCBY or somesuch, and did a lousy 6 a.m. shift at a grocery store as a cashier during a summer or two in college. I particularly hated being a waitress, probably being prematurely snotty in preparation for my career as a transactional lawyer. None of those jobs lasted long. I chose to work at the cool record store in the mall for minimum wage instead, which meant I had no money, but my co-workers were interesting and I got to stock up on imports for cheap.

I worked at a great restaurant- best in town!- as a dishwasher. then they made me a busboy. BUT we had to carry the trays of dirty dishes balanced above our shoulders supported by 1 hand. I could never do it, so I would just lug them back at waist level holding with two hands. the manager kept reminding me I had to do it the other way, but eventually gave up and moved me back in the kitchen.

i hated the kitchen because we had to stock the bar, and the owner sat there every night getting toasted. he would call me over and wipe his hands on my apron. pissed me off.

Anyway I quit ands took a job in the sock department at EJ Korvette's!

note to ncs. this type post requires you to land somewhere far beneath "transactional lawyer."

Perhaps I previously posted that I worked at Friendly's once for an hour, and that the point at which I decided to quit was when the trainer first rummaged around for a few minutes to find the salad tongs to show me how to serve salad, and then said, "this is how we serve salad here," and reached into the cooler and grabbed a handful with his bare hand.

They sent me a check for the $4.49 or whatever it was that I earned for that hour.

I could handle the waitress bit for only so long which is why I started working in the back of the house.

Now I'm wondering why I do what I do. It's still a service industry job, having to be nice and helpful to idiots and jerks who make way more money than I do, treat me like shit, expect me to be a mind reader, and I'm expected to be on call 24/7 (but not compensated for it). Fuckers*. I wonder if Bennigan's is hiring...

*If you are professional and don't throw Violet Beauregard-like hissy fits ("I want it NOW!"), I'll bust my ass for you and won't whine about it.

This was in the late 40s. There were no such things.

So you knew not to eat salad in that level restaurant when you quit. did you ever think if you had stayed for a few weeks you would know a lot more about what not to eat?

Ever eat chilli at a restaurant?

So what was so special about a Fribble? My first ever date was to Friendly's to get a Fribble.

That relationship didn't last long.
