And I agree with sitc re: people being willing to buy stuff from Iraq because would be afraid there'd be other people claiming it and could end up paying Iraq (or whatever entity in Iraq extracts the oil) and getting nothing, or having to incur huge legal expenses fighting over ownership or what-have-you. This would seem to me to probably have the effect of Iraq having to sell at a lower price (to compensate for probability of pain-in-the-ass factor and undependability). The debt/ownership stuff has to get settled or it's not going to work well.

confidential to fringe: I don't think too manyof the people posting here take it too seriously. i mean I work in a firm where some people voted for al gore, and i still like them. My favorite aunt who died a month ago was one of the 5% of the country who HATED ALL BUSHES in nov. 01, and she was still my favrite aunt.
Ty, Atticus GGG, Sammmy, Larry they come here, and I beat them, sure. but on some level maybe they grow a little as human beings. you can't hate your dog, you know.

I'm sure it's not really serious, but it's about serious stuff and I find it disturbing. Kind of like I found it disturbing when this guy in college poured bleach into his fish tank to watch them die. Really, in the greater scheme of things, they're fish and they die all the time. But it's still disturbing.
That analogy probably sucked. Gotta cut back on the cold medicine.

The free exchange of ideas can be disturbing at times. I'm surprised you haven suggested taxing it to make it less so.

When I depart from the Dem party line, such as it is, no one on the lefty here cares. When I disagree with the GOP party line, the fightin' starts. I will concede that I'm stubborn.

I just got to keep coming back for more. There are fetishistic aspects to it. For example, now that I'm a mod I'm going to start insisting that Hank wear leather around here.

I think fringey fundamentally misunderstands the purposes of a board such as this, and likely believes that we both write excoriating letters to editors, harangue passers-by with political diatribes, and indoctrinate our kids, me on the evils of free thought, you on the evils of the rich.
No, on second thought, she likely does not think that you indoctrinate your kids.

Bilmore, Slave started ripping you off like this while you were gone. I thought he woulda stopped when you came back, but apparently he wants to hang here a little and see how the big boys play.
Everyone here knows I've moved on to Matthew Yglesias and Tim Dunlop. I thought the latter was F.A. Hayek's blog, but I digress.

I think the current level of discourse on this board is pretty impressive, e.g. compared to other months or the Stalin Board, which attracts its share of morons. And I've given up on haranguing passers-by with political diatribes -- now I read from Ecclesiastes.

I am disturbed by the fact that you are disturbed by this. Why are so many women disturbed by passionate discourse between people who disagree with each other?
I think it is because our sexist and misogynistic society tells women to be nice little girls and most internalize this sexism. Then they feel disturbed/scared/anxious when people argue, even if they are separated by thousands of miles of cyberspace when they do it.
If I had internalized the sexism and misogyny of our society, I would hate myself for posting on the politics board.*
*does this post belong on the FB? I am still not clear on where potty parity/sexism/racism/hating-one's self because of sexism/racism/potty parity belongs.

Breast-Feeding Driver Sentenced to Three Months of House Arrest
I am disturbed by this news story for more than one reason.
Breast-Feeding Driver Sentenced to Three Months of House Arrest
Published: Dec 4, 2003
RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) - A woman who nursed her infant while driving 65 mph on the Ohio Turnpike was sentenced Thursday to three months of house arrest for violating child-restraint laws.
Donkers said her husband ordered her by cell phone to breast-feed their 7-month-old daughter to save time while she drove on the turnpike May 8. Police stopped Donkers after a trucker who saw her holding the baby on her lap called 911.
Donkers testified she did nothing wrong because the couple's religious beliefs require her to follow her husband's directives. They belong to the First Christian Fellowship for Eternal Sovereignty, which has a history of challenging the government.

Now, now. When multiple drivers honk at you, do you accuse the second, third, and fourth of merely copying the first?
I enjoy Yglesias - bright guy! - but Dunlop just grates on me.

Agree. I periodically check out Infirm, and then come back here happy. This is the white nerdy guy's dozens, I think.

Fortunately, truly smart people really can't do a completely moronic sock. You do get the gems floating through periodically.

Once I get over the little thrill of having discovered an Aussie blogger, I'm sure I'll get tired of Dunlop too.
