Black Label -- that's the red can (steel) with a square black label if I recall. Have had that.

Never heard of Schooner or Toby. Are they legal in the US?

What about Point? My sister couldn't fit her car in the garage because of the empty Point cans that were accumulated in there. I heard a rumor it was trendy on the east coast at some point. Suckers.

Ah, the memories.
Especially when you looked at the fine print and saw "fine vodka, distilled in Somerville, Mass."

The paper bag you drink it out of often comes in handy later. Hardcores are very efficient in their ways.

Lone Star

Someone recently asked if anyone drinks Lone Star anymore. I witnessed two discerning beer drinkers--one of them my sister--at my local watering hole downing the stuff as if it were water. When interrogated on the subject, she was offended that I used the word "swill," so I never found out why she was drinking it.

Black Label was big in the '50s, '60's apparently, and then enjoyed a resurgence in the late 80's because I started legally drinking (no actually it is because they were the first in Canada to switch from the stubby (boo hoo) to the long neck (which became trendy).

Schooner & Toby should be illegal anywhere. Not good stuff. But I think they stopped making both of them about 15 years ago so no worries about encountering them.

I have never heard of Point. Now I am remembering "Laker" beer. ("Laker, Laker Laker!") and Steeler beer (not named after the Pittsburgh Steelers).

Somebody died, and has stupid, greedy heirs. I worked retail when I was in college, and at least once a week, someone would try to return cosmetics, pantyhose (with packaging showing groovy girls in miniskirts), or 10 seasons old clothing that they had cleaned out of dead grandma's closet. When I would explain that the item in question had not been sold by the store for many, many years, some would act ashamed, but many just got testy and demanded a refund anyway

When my grandfather died, his second wife's son came over to his house, found several packages of socks that were unopened, and volunteered to return them. Of course, he picked up a credit card off of my grandfather's desk and went on a little spending spree. It was great fun to call Citibank several weeks later and inform them that Dr. __________ could not have made those purchases on that date as he had died several days prior. I think I had to send them a death certificate...

Texan, please.

Lone star? It's so disgusting. I second the motion that Shiner is the official local beer of Texas.

We picked up something great at central market over the past few weeks: Delirium Tremens:

Now that Celis is back in the picture, I can't support the motion but I'm with you in spirit. Yes, yes, i know it's brewed in Michigan now, but Celis Pale Bock was there when I needed it, and now that it's back, I'll not abandon it.

Black Label - big here in late 60's. Also Fox Deluxe, (3 24-cases, ten bucks), Pfieffers, and Pointe (with an "e"), made in Wisconsin, I think. (Stevens Point?)

Coors was like foreign beer - people would bring back a case when they went to CO.

And, I think we had Toby. Schooner, no memory. (Of course, that could mean that it was awesome beer, too.)

Plea for Help

Dearest St. Fringe the Benefit,

Please put away the kayak and come back to the board. Things just haven't been the same here since you left. I promise, on behalf of the entire fb community, that we will try to do a better job of heeding your advice and laughing at all of your hilarious rebuttals. Heck, we took the name of the board from your initials, can't you see our devotion to you?

I know that for a little while now it has appeared that we were taking you for granted, and for that we feel horribly ashamed. But you should really give us another chance. We can change. With your support and encouragement, we could be a better fb tomorrow than we are today. And let's not even get into how great next week could be. Really.

Please return before I am forced to break into a verse of You Are My Sunshine. If you push me to that point, it will not be pretty. I'll sing it all slow and sad instead of upbeat and peppy. And I might cry at the end. I'm sure you don't want that on your conscience.

I could go on, but I'm afraid that at some point I will start to sound pathetic. Please come back!

Your most humble servant,

ncs

Huh, Belgian ale. I have enjoyed the products of the Trappists but never that. I'll give it a shot.

One thing that makes me nervous. Is that really a pink elephant on the label? Please say you see it. Please say you see it.

But so many of the recipes have changed, it's not even the same. Though I think the pale bock may be.

I still have a Celis A Beer! t shirt. Good times.

Unfortunately, I have to point out that there is no "e" at the end of Point. However, you are correct that it is from Stevens Point. Very close to the homeland.

Damn. I was sure of the "e".

(But then, I was sure about the elephant, too.)
